Wacaco Brand Guidelines
Espresso, anywhere.
Aa
Two constants: a plum palette and a travel-sans register. Abstract homage — not a Wacaco product or mark.
Espresso, anywhere
Wacaco is the Hong Kong brand that pioneered portable hand-pump espresso with the Nanopresso, made in mainland China.
Wacaco closes the round with the most portable answer of all — espresso you carry. From Hong Kong, Wacaco makes portable, hand-powered espresso makers and travel coffee gear, and it effectively created the category. Its answer to how a maker becomes a name is to invent a use: build a hand-pump espresso maker small enough for a bag, and let travellers, campers and commuters take espresso anywhere. A maker, that put espresso in a pocket.
Its identity is espresso, anywhere. Wacaco’s Nanopresso, its portable category and its Hong Kong origin are the work it is known for. A maker, made in China. Espresso, anywhere.
(Honest notes, so the story stays precise, and the make is a theme. Wacaco — at wacaco.com, as Wacaco Company Limited — makes portable, hand-powered espresso makers and travel coffee gear: the Minipresso from 2014, the flagship Nanopresso from 2017, the enthusiast Picopresso, and brewers such as the Pipamoka and Cuppamoka. Its signature is hand-pump portable espresso, a category it pioneered. It was founded in 2013 in Hong Kong by Hugo Cailleton and Jessie Wang. On where it is made — the theme of this round — Wacaco is a Hong Kong brand and headquarters, but its products are made in mainland China, and the company says it opened its own production facilities there in 2021; we state that plainly, a brand-here, made-in-China story rather than a claim of Hong Kong manufacture. On ownership, it is an independent, founder-owned company. Its name and marks, and the Nanopresso’s distinctive shape, are IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
Wacaco lives in a plum palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Wacaco’s identity is portable, made and modern — a plum, an ink, a lilac, a deep plum, and a paper. The palette leans plum and lilac: a distinctive register for a modern, travel-minded maker, drawn as colour rather than any product finish. It signals a portable espresso maker. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.
The lesson is a plum palette signals a portable, modern identity. Wacaco’s world is a compact, travel-ready object. For designers, it is a reminder that a deep plum and a soft lilac can carry a portable maker — a modern, distinctive register for gear made to move. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: invent a use; own the category; be honest about the make; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a travel sans — modern, compact, made.
Wacaco’s identity carries a modern, compact, made spirit — a travel-gear maker, not a café fixture. A travel sans captures the mood: contemporary, practical and portable, the register of a maker whose product goes in a bag. Set in a plum palette, the travel sans feels modern and compact — exactly the personality Wacaco carries. It is a portable category rather than a logo, mirroring a hand-pump maker. (Wacaco’s real wordmark, and the Nanopresso’s pill-shaped body, are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a travel-sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the maker: modern, compact and made.

The coffee gear makers
Wacaco stands for espresso, anywhere — honestly made.
Wacaco closes the round by inventing a use — and telling its make honestly. A plum palette, a travel sans and a portable maker make one thing — espresso, anywhere — the whole identity: portable, made and modern. The pioneered portable category is the differentiator, and the honest, brand-here-made-in-China story is the meaning. The point is a Hong Kong maker that created hand-pump portable espresso, put it in a bag, and is candid that the products are made in mainland China.
Put to work, the identity is an invented use, told straight, as design. A maker in this spirit would create a category and own it — portable espresso, made to move. A reader in this spirit would keep the make honest: Wacaco is a Hong Kong brand and headquarters, but its products are made in mainland China, so the brand and the factory sit in different places, told plainly. Wacaco closes the round’s where-made thread at the honest brand-here-made-elsewhere end — the counterpoint to the makers that build at home — and holds its ownership thread at the independent, founder-owned end. Across the round, seven makers — a Milanese machine house, a Seattle flow-control maker, a German grinder, a Japanese dripper, a Taiwanese value grinder, a Barcelona design house and a Hong Kong portable maker — answer the vein’s questions: around the world of coffee gear, where is it really made, and who still owns the maker? The honest editorial moves are to state the mainland-China make plainly, to credit the pioneered category, and to present the founders as public facts. The lesson Wacaco teaches is that an invented use can hold an identity: the portable category gives it substance, and the honesty about the make keeps it credible. Espresso, anywhere is the personality, and the portable maker is the proof.
For designers and brand-builders, Wacaco closes the coffee gear makers, from Hong Kong: invent a use — and be honest about where it is made. The lessons: create a category; own it; disclose a brand-here, made-elsewhere split plainly; credit your founders as public facts; and never reproduce a logo. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Wacaco is the Hong Kong brand that pioneered portable hand-pump espresso with the Nanopresso, made in mainland China — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Wacaco made espresso-anywhere the identity — proof that a maker, honestly told, can be the difference.
