Quick reference

pxrem

1rem equals your root font-size (16px by default). rem is relative to the root; em is relative to the parent element. Using rem for type & spacing respects a user’s browser font-size for accessibility. Everything is calculated locally.

How to use the PX to REM Converter

  1. Set your root font-size (16px by default).

Frequently asked questions

How many px is 1rem?

By default 1rem equals 16px (the browser's default root font-size). If you change the root size, 1rem changes with it.

How do I convert px to rem for a 16px base?

Divide the pixel value by 16 — e.g. 24px is 1.5rem. This tool does it live and shows a reference table.

What if my root font-size isn't 16px?

Set your actual root size (e.g. 10px if you use font-size: 62.5%) and every conversion updates to match.

What's the difference between rem and em?

rem is always relative to the root element's font-size; em is relative to the current element's parent, so it compounds when nested.

Why use rem instead of px?

rem scales with the user's browser font-size setting, so type and spacing stay accessible — px is fixed and ignores that preference.
