How do I crop a picture into a circle?

Drop the image in, drag it until the subject is centred in the circle, zoom to fill, and click “Download PNG”. Everything outside the circle is transparent.

Why is the downloaded image square?

Image files are always rectangular. The corners outside the circle are transparent, so it shows as a circle on any background.
