Frequently asked questions

How are colours matched to names?

By perceptual distance in the OKLab colour space, which matches how different colours look to people far better than comparing RGB numbers.

Where do the names come from?

From the curated “best of” list of the open-source color-name-list project by David Aerne (MIT licence), plus the 148 standard CSS colour names.

What does “exact match” mean?

Your colour is the same, or practically indistinguishable from, a named colour. “Close” and “nearest” mean the name describes a similar shade.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
