80s Photo Filter
Give any photo a 1980s look: faded family album colour, a soft mall portrait on a mottled backdrop, a laser beam backdrop, direct flash or neon night. Add a period-style date stamp and a print border, set the strength, then download the full-size photo as a JPG or PNG with no watermark. It works in your browser, so your photos are never uploaded. It changes colour, light and texture, and it does not change your hair or clothes: see the note on the 80s trend below.
100% private — everything runs in your browser. Every photo is processed on your device with our own code; nothing is uploaded or stored.

This filter changes colour, light and texture. It does not change your hair, clothes or face. Exports stay at the full size of your photo, with no watermark. Your photos are not uploaded.
How to give a photo an 80s look
- Drop a photo, paste one, or try the sample. Several photos at once work too.
- Pick a look. The small previews show each look on your own photo.
- Set the strength and the grain.
- For a portrait look, choose a backdrop and tap the face so the oval sits around it.
- Turn the date stamp on or off, and type your own date.
- Pick a border, drag the before and after slider, then download the full-size JPG or PNG.
What you can use it for
- Throwback posts and profile pictures
- Reunion, birthday and themed party invitations
- Album covers, zine pages and posters with a retro feel
- Giving a set of holiday photos one matching look
- Mood boards and period references for design work
The 80s trend on Instagram
If you came here from the 80s trend: it took off in September 2026 through Instagram Stories and the Add Yours sticker. People upload a photo to ChatGPT and ask for a mid-1980s version, and the AI redraws hair, clothes and background. Prompts also ask for analogue grain, faded colours, direct flash, soft focus and a red-orange date stamp in a lower corner (Business Today, 9 September 2026).
This page does the second half of that list, on your real photo, with no prompt and no AI. It won’t give you big hair. It will give you the film look, the date stamp and a studio backdrop, and your face stays exactly as it is. Made Good Designs is not affiliated with OpenAI or Instagram.
The eight 80s looks
| Look | What it aims at | Grain | Faded | Colour | Warmth | Soft |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Family album | Faded warm print with a soft edge, the snapshot look | 26 | 34 | −14 | +14 | 24 |
| Mall portrait | Soft focus in an oval on a mottled backdrop, with a faded second profile | 20 | 16 | −6 | +6 | 62 |
| Laser backdrop | Sitter in an oval on a blue and pink beam backdrop | 28 | 10 | +8 | +2 | 34 |
| Direct flash | On-camera flash: bright centre, lifted blacks, cool shadows | 30 | 14 | 0 | 0 | 12 |
| Neon night | High colour with pink and cyan glow around bright lights | 34 | 6 | +44 | −8 | 16 |
| Preppy catalog | Soft daylight, muted colour, faded print tones | 14 | 48 | −32 | +2 | 24 |
| Wood-panel den | Warm tungsten light and earthy, muted colour | 28 | 22 | −30 | +48 | 24 |
| Glossy magazine | Soft glow on highlights with very little grain | 8 | 6 | +12 | +8 | 48 |
Numbers are each look’s starting slider values. The looks follow what published guides call an 80s photo: the portrait and room styles in a Kapwing prompt guide, 9 September 2026, and the film traits in the Business Today report. All of them are our own recipes, not copies of a film stock.
Portrait studio backdrops
The tool has 5 backdrops of our own drawing: mottled blue, mauve and grey cloth, a soft gradient, and laser beams. No face detection is involved. You tap the photo and the oval goes there, then set its size.
- Works best on a head and shoulders shot with the face near the middle.
- A busy background inside the oval stays there. For a clean sitter, cut out the background with Change Image Background, choose Transparent (PNG) and drop that file here.
- Prefer your own background? Choose None and keep the colour look.
Border sizes
| Border | A 4,032 × 3,024 photo becomes | A 6,000 × 4,000 photo becomes |
|---|---|---|
| No border | 4,032 × 3,024 px | 6,000 × 4,000 px |
| White print border | 4,244 × 3,236 px | 6,280 × 4,280 px |
| White border, round corners | 4,214 × 3,206 px | 6,240 × 4,240 px |
| Album page with photo corners | 4,636 × 3,628 px | 6,800 × 4,800 px |
| 35 mm film strip | 4,032 × 3,840 px | 6,000 × 5,080 px |
A border goes around the photo, so nothing is cropped or resized. PNG keeps the holes of the film strip and round corners clear. JPG fills them with white.

How do I make a photo look like the 80s?
Drop it in and pick a look. Family album gives faded warm colour, grain and a date stamp. Mall portrait and Laser backdrop put the sitter in a soft oval on a studio backdrop. Direct flash and Neon night suit party and night photos.
Can this filter change my hair and clothes?
No. This is a filter, so it changes colour, light and texture only. Big hair and shoulder pads in the trend pictures come from AI image tools, which redraw the person. A filter keeps your photo as it is.
How do I get a laser backdrop behind me?
Pick Laser backdrop and tap your face, and the backdrop shows around a soft oval. For a cleaner edge, cut yourself out first with a background tool, save a PNG with a clear background and drop it here with the oval off.
What is the faded second profile?
A big, pale copy of the same photo behind the sitter, placed to one side. It is a nod to double-image studio portraits. Set it with the Faded second profile slider, or take it down to zero.
Is the export full size?
Yes. The download has every pixel of your photo. A border adds to the size around it, and the tool shows the exact final size before you download.
Will the date stamp show the real date?
It shows whatever you set: pick any date or type your own text. Digits, some capital letters and the marks ' / : . – work. The tool tells you if it has to leave a character out.
Does it make a real old photo?
No. It is a style, and it looks like one on purpose. Please don’t present an edited photo as a real old one.
Is it free, with no watermark?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server. Downloads carry no location data from the original file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Tap the box at the top to pick a photo. Very large photos may be scaled down if a phone can’t hold them, and the tool says so.
