What is AVIF?

AVIF is a newer, very efficient image format that isn't supported everywhere — converting to JPG makes images open in any app.

Why won't my AVIF open in Photoshop?

Many apps don't yet support AVIF; JPG is universally compatible.

Does AVIF to JPG lose quality?

There's a small lossy step; at high quality it's visually identical. AVIF is efficient, so the JPG may be larger.

What about transparent AVIF areas?

JPG can't store transparency, so they're filled with your chosen background colour. Use AVIF to PNG to keep transparency.
