How to print big letters

1. Pick a quick set, or choose My word and type your own.

4. Leave the size as big as fits, or type an exact capital height.
5. Choose outline to save ink, or solid colour.

Space inside a 10 mm margin. The largest letter depends on the font: wide fonts lose height to fit their widest letter on the page, and turning the page to landscape usually helps.

Worked out by the tool for portrait sheets with a 6.35 mm margin and overlap. Narrow letters use fewer sheets, wide letters more.

How letter height works

Cap height is the height of a capital letter above the baseline. Round and pointed letters such as O and A may go slightly past it, which type designers call overshoot. Tips for a clean display

• Print the guide page first to check your scale.
• Count your repeated letters: type the word and each one prints as many times as it appears.
• Cut letters from card, or print outlines on coloured paper.
• Use the same printer and paper for the whole set.
• Mark a light pencil line on the wall or board, and hang letters along it.

Yes. There is no account and no watermark. One set can run to 400 sheets.

How do I print one big letter on each page?

Choose A–Z, one per page. You get a 26-page PDF with one big letter on each sheet. Wide fonts come out taller on landscape pages. For narrow fonts such as Anton, try portrait.

How do I make letters bigger than one sheet?

Choose Giant letters over several sheets, type your word and set the height. Each letter splits across as many sheets as it needs, with labels and trim lines so the pieces join up.

How do I print a word as a banner?

Choose Whole word across sheets. The word runs as one strip over the sheets, with proper spacing between letters. Start a new line in the box for a second banner.

How do I make letters an exact size?

Set Letter size to An exact height and type the height of a capital letter. Print at 100% or Actual size, then check the 50 mm bar on the page, or the square on the guide page, with a ruler.

Why are round letters a little taller?

Letters such as O and S are drawn slightly past the top and bottom of flat letters like H, so that they look the same height. The height you type is the height of the flat capitals.

Are all the letters the same size?

Yes. All the letters in a set use one scale and line up on one baseline, so a word looks right when you hang it. Wide letters like W use more sheets than narrow ones like I.

Can I use outline letters for colouring?

Yes. Outline only prints just the edge of each letter, which also saves ink. Change the line width to suit.

Which paper should I use?

Card holds up better on a wall than plain copy paper, if your printer can feed it. Coloured paper with black outlines is a cheap way to get bright letters.

What does Mirror do?

It flips the letters, so you can print them on the back of coloured card and cut them out. The printed lines then stay hidden on the back.

Which characters can I type?

Letters, numbers, common punctuation and most accented Latin letters, depending on the font. If a font lacks a character, the tool tells you and leaves it out.

Is this a font I can install?

No. It makes finished printable sheets, not a font file. Nothing is installed on your device.

Is what I type kept?

No. It stays in your browser and is not uploaded or stored.
