Frequently asked questions

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

YouTube recommends a 16:9 thumbnail; its help pages currently suggest 3840 × 2160, with a minimum width of 640 px. 1280 × 720 is the long-standing standard and keeps files small — YouTube's mobile app limits thumbnail uploads to 2 MB.

What size is a YouTube channel banner?

YouTube recommends 2560 × 1440 (16:9), with a minimum of 2048 × 1152 and 6 MB or smaller. Only the centre strip shows on every device — keep text and logos inside the dashed safe area (about 1546 × 423 at full size).

Should I save thumbnails as JPG or PNG?

JPG keeps photo thumbnails small enough for every upload limit. Use PNG for thumbnails that are mostly flat graphics and text.

Will my image be cropped?

Only if you choose Fill. Drag the image to choose what stays in frame and use Zoom to tighten it. Choose Fit to keep the whole image — the empty space is filled with a blurred copy of your photo or a solid colour.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Resizing happens in your browser, so your photos never leave your device.
