Pixels needed for a print
Print size = pixels ÷ DPI. 300 DPI is the standard for photo prints and magazines, 150–200 DPI is fine for posters viewed from a distance. The image you choose is read in your browser and never uploaded.
How to work out print size
- Enter the image's width and height in pixels, or open the image.
- Choose the print DPI (300 for photos).
- Check the print size and quality per paper size.
- Use the second calculator to find the pixels needed for a print size.
What you can use it for
- Check whether a photo is big enough to print on A4 or as a poster
- Prepare images for print shops and photo labs
- Plan camera resolution for large prints
- Explain print limits to clients

How big can I print my photo?
Divide the pixels by the DPI. A 4000 × 3000 photo at 300 DPI prints at about 33.9 × 25.4 cm (13.3 × 10 in).
What DPI do I need?
300 DPI for photos and magazines viewed up close; 150–200 DPI for posters and banners seen from further away.
Can I just increase the DPI?
Changing DPI only changes the print size — it doesn't add detail. To print bigger at the same quality you need more pixels (try our Image Upscaler).
Is my image uploaded?
No. Its size is read in your browser.
