The smart brewer

Goat Story is the Slovenian coffee-gear brand behind the GINA smart brewer, designed in Ljubljana from Kickstarter roots.

Goat Story is the round’s smart brewer — a Slovenian brand that grew from a crowdfunded curiosity into a considered coffee house. Goat Story makes coffee brewing gear and roasts its own coffee, and it is known for the GINA. Its answer to how a maker becomes a name is to start with a hit and grow into craft: launch on Kickstarter, then build a smart brewer that measures as it pours. A brewer, that thinks.

Its identity is the smart brewer. Goat Story’s GINA, its Kickstarter roots and its Slovenian design are the work it is known for. A brewer, designed in Ljubljana. The smart brewer.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Goat Story — at goat-story.com — makes coffee brewing gear and roasts its own coffee; its signature is the GINA, a brewer with an app-connected scale that supports pour-over, immersion and cold drip, alongside ARCO grinders and the original horn-shaped Goat Mug that launched the brand. It was founded in 2014 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, out of a Kickstarter campaign for the Goat Mug that drew more than ten thousand backers, and it opened its own roastery in 2019. On where it is made — a theme of this round — Goat Story is designed and based in Ljubljana, and its coffee is roasted in Slovenia, but it does not state where the hardware is manufactured, so we do not claim the gear is made in Slovenia. On ownership, it is an independent Slovenian company, which we present as reported. A Graycano dripper is reported but not confirmed as current, so we lead with the GINA. Its name and marks, and the Goat Mug’s horn shape, are IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Goat Story lives in an olive palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Goat Story’s identity is inventive, made and grounded — an olive, an ink, a sage, a deep olive, and a paper. The palette leans olive and sage: a grounded, considered register for an inventive brand with roots in craft. It signals a smart, thoughtful brewer. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is an olive palette signals an inventive, grounded identity. Goat Story’s world is an inventive, grounded object. For designers, it is a reminder that a muted olive and a soft sage can carry a coffee house — the calm of considered craft. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: start with a hit; grow into craft; be honest about the make; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a smart sans — modern, considered, clean.

Goat Story’s identity carries a modern, considered, clean spirit — an inventive brand, not a legacy house. A smart sans captures the mood: contemporary, thoughtful and tidy, the register of a brewer that measures as it pours. Set in an olive palette, the smart sans feels modern and considered — exactly the personality Goat Story carries. It is a smart brewer rather than a logo, mirroring a measured pour. (Goat Story’s real wordmark, and the Goat Mug’s horn shape, are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a smart-sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brewer: modern, considered and clean.

The brewing makers

Goat Story stands for the smart brewer, designed in Ljubljana.

Goat Story is a lesson in how invention and growth can be an identity. An olive palette, a smart sans and a measured pour make one thing — the smart brewer — the whole identity: inventive, made and grounded. The GINA smart brewer is the differentiator, and the Kickstarter-to-craft growth is the meaning. The point is a Slovenian brand that started with a crowdfunded mug and grew into a smart brewer, a grinder line and its own roastery.

Put to work, the identity is invention and growth, told straight, as design. A maker in this spirit would start with a hit and grow into craft — the Goat Mug, then the GINA. A reader in this spirit would keep the make honest: Goat Story is designed in Ljubljana and roasts its coffee in Slovenia, but it does not say where the hardware is made, so a reader should not assume it is made in Slovenia. Goat Story holds the round’s designed-here-made-where thread at the undisclosed end with the design-led brands, against the made-at-home Melitta and Origami, and it carries the small-independent thread. The honest editorial moves are to lead with the GINA rather than the unconfirmed Graycano, to state the Slovenian design and roasting while leaving the hardware make undisclosed, and to present the ownership as reported. The lesson Goat Story teaches is that invention and growth can hold an identity: the smart brewer gives it substance, and the roastery keeps it credible. The smart brewer is the personality, and the GINA is the proof.

For designers and brand-builders, Goat Story holds a designed-here pole in the brewing makers: start with a hit — and grow into craft. The lessons: launch on a strong idea; deepen into craft; state design and roasting honestly while leaving unknown make undisclosed; lead with a confirmed product; and never reproduce a logo. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Goat Story is the Slovenian coffee-gear brand behind the GINA smart brewer, designed in Ljubljana from Kickstarter roots — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Goat Story made the smart brewer the identity — proof that a brewer, honestly told, can be the difference.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Goat Story’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Goat Story, and it does not promote the purchase or use of any product. The Goat Story name and marks (and GINA/Goat Mug) are trademarks/works of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and glass/scale texture swatches); no brewer, mug, carafe, silhouette, logo or mark is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from public sources (goat-story.com): Goat Story makes coffee brewing gear and roasts its own coffee — signature the GINA (an app-connected-scale brewer for pour-over, immersion and cold drip), plus ARCO grinders and the original horn-shaped Goat Mug — founded 2014 in Ljubljana, Slovenia out of a Kickstarter campaign (10,000+ backers), with its own roastery from 2019. Honest notes: Goat Story is designed/based in Ljubljana and roasts in Slovenia, but the hardware manufacturing country is not disclosed (so not claimed as made in Slovenia); it is an independent Slovenian company (reported); a Graycano dripper is reported but not confirmed as current, so we lead with the GINA. No official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
