A document editor needs formatting controls that stay out of the way until they are needed. Our screens show a formatting toolbar above a document with headings, a checklist and a quote, plus live collaborator cursors and a margin comment, giving you a collaborative writing interface to study across eight visual styles for web and mobile. Every example is an original design that comes with its HTML code and a DESIGN.md of colour, type and spacing tokens, in light and dark. Free to use and adapt.

A fixed toolbar is easier to discover and suits long documents and new users. A floating toolbar that appears on text selection keeps the page clean and suits experienced writers. Many editors combine a minimal fixed bar with a contextual one on selection and slash commands.
Start with headings, bold, italic, links, bulleted and numbered lists, checklists, quotes and image insertion. Add tables, code and alignment only if your users need them. Keep the visible set small and move the rest into a menu or slash command list.
Show each collaborator's cursor and selection in a distinct colour with their name, list who is present as avatars near the top and anchor comments to highlighted text in the margin. Keep these cues subtle so they inform without distracting from writing.
