Bank onboarding design tips

Tell people up front what they will need (ID, address, a few minutes) so they can finish in one go.
Explain why each piece of personal information is needed and how it is protected, right next to the fields.
Show progress with named steps and let people pause and come back.
End with something useful to do next, such as adding money or ordering a card, not just a success message.

Questions

Why do banking apps ask for ID and a selfie?

Banks are legally required to confirm who their customers are (often called know-your-customer checks). A photo ID plus a selfie lets this happen online in minutes instead of in a branch.

How many steps should account opening have?

Keep it to the few the regulation and the product need, usually four to six short steps, with progress shown throughout. Pre-fill what you can and ask for documents only once.
