Breadcrumbs UI design examples

Breadcrumbs show where a page sits in the site and give a one-click way back up. These examples are a nav labelled Breadcrumb around an ordered list of links, with aria-current on the current page and separators drawn in CSS so screen readers do not read them. A long trail collapses behind a show-more button, and on phones the trail folds to a back link to the parent. Eight styles, light and dark. Every example is an original design that comes with its HTML code and a DESIGN.md of colour, type and spacing tokens, in light and dark. Free to use and adapt.

Breadcrumbs design tips

Start at the home page and end at the current page, in the same order as the site's structure.
Draw separators with CSS, not as text characters screen readers would read out.
Collapse long middle levels behind a button rather than truncating every label.
On small screens a single back link to the parent is often clearer than a wrapped trail.

Questions

Should the current page be a link?

It can be either. These examples keep it as a link with aria-current="page", which the WAI-ARIA breadcrumb example also does; styling makes clear it is where you are.

Do breadcrumbs help SEO?

They give search engines clear internal links and structure, and BreadcrumbList structured data can show the trail in results. The main reason to add them is still navigation for people.
