Tooltips give icon buttons and unfamiliar terms a short text hint. These examples show the hint on hover and on keyboard focus, keep it open while the pointer is over it, and hide it on Escape without moving focus, as WCAG 1.4.13 asks. The bubble has role="tooltip" and names or describes its trigger. Eight styles, light and dark, HTML and CSS with a few lines of JavaScript. Every example is an original design that comes with its HTML code and a DESIGN.md of colour, type and spacing tokens, in light and dark. Free to use and adapt.

Not reliably, because there is no hover. These examples also show on focus, but for touch screens put important hints in visible text and keep tooltips as a desktop extra.
Give the bubble role="tooltip" and an id, then point to it from the trigger with aria-describedby (or aria-labelledby for an icon-only button). The tooltip must not take focus itself.
