The candy glass

Helle Mardahl designs playful, candy-coloured mouth-blown glass objects.

Helle Mardahl is a lesson in a colour world as the identity. A Copenhagen glass studio, it makes playful, candy-coloured, colour-blocked mouth-blown glass — objects and tableware that sit between art and function, in a nostalgic sweet-shop palette of milky and jewel tones. The whole brand is a dreamy universe of colour.

Its identity is the candy glass. Helle Mardahl’s richly coloured, colour-blocked pieces — the signature “Bon Bon” world — are the work it is known for. Glass, made candy. A studio built on sweet-shop colour.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Helle Mardahl is an independent, founder-led Danish studio in Copenhagen, trading as Helle Mardahl International, with the Central Saint Martins–trained designer Helle Mardahl at its centre; the exact founding year isn’t firmly documented, so we place it in the mid-2010s rather than pin a date. An important nuance on the making: the design, the colour direction and the signing are hers — each piece is hand-signed — but the glass is mouth-blown in Denmark by professional glassblowers, associated with the Holmegaard glassworks, rather than blown by Helle Mardahl herself in her own furnace. We keep the “Bon Bon” name as her specific collection, not a generic term, and we don’t confuse the studio with the separate mass-market “Holmegaard” tableware brand. Its named collections and its Design Within Reach collaboration are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Helle Mardahl lives in a candy palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Helle Mardahl’s identity is sweet, playful and nostalgic — a bon-bon pink, an ink, a mint, a butter, and a cream. The palette leans on candy colours: the register of a sweet shop rendered in glass. It signals joy and colour over restraint. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a candy palette signals a playful identity. Helle Mardahl’s world is a sweet, playful, nostalgic object. For designers, it is a reminder that a candy palette — colour-blocked pink, mint and butter — can carry a whole brand built on joy and nostalgia. Because bright candy tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the loud colour live in the discs, palette and band. The takeaways: build a colour world; block the colours boldly; keep it joyful; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a playful rounded — sweet, joyful, soft.

Helle Mardahl’s identity carries a sweet, joyful, soft spirit — a playful object, not a serious one. A playful rounded type captures the mood: friendly, bouncy and warm, the register of candy and sweet-shop nostalgia. Set in a candy palette, the playful rounded feels sweet and joyful — exactly the personality Helle Mardahl carries. It is soft rather than sharp, mirroring a colour-blocked, candy-coloured object. (Helle Mardahl’s real objects, colour-blocked forms and wordmark are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a playful-rounded spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: sweet, joyful and soft.

A colour world as identity

Helle Mardahl stands for the candy glass.

Helle Mardahl is a lesson in making a colour world the identity. A candy palette, a playful rounded and colour-blocked glass make a sweet-shop universe the whole brand — sweet, joyful and nostalgic. The colour is the differentiator. The differentiator is a complete, committed colour world — candy tones, colour-blocking and a nostalgic sweetness — carried consistently across objects, tableware and lighting.

Put to work, the identity is a colour world as design. A studio building in this spirit would commit fully to a distinctive palette and mood and carry it everywhere, so the customer buys into a feeling and a world rather than a single object. The lesson Helle Mardahl teaches is that a strong colour world plus real craft can build a brand: the candy palette gives it joy, and the mouth-blown glass gives it substance — with the glassblowers credited honestly. The colour is the personality, and the craft is the proof.

For designers and brand-builders, Helle Mardahl offers a clear takeaway: own a colour world. The lessons: commit to a palette; block the colour; keep it joyful; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: Helle Mardahl is an independent Copenhagen studio led by the designer of the same name, whose candy-coloured pieces are mouth-blown in Denmark by professional glassblowers rather than by her own hand — “Bon Bon” is her collection, not a generic term, and its pieces are described but never reproduced, with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Helle Mardahl made the candy glass the brand — proof that a colour world can be the difference.
