The air-weave

Susan Fang makes ethereal, dreamy womenswear built on her Air-Weave bead-and-bubble technique.

Susan Fang is a lesson in a signature technique as the identity. A Chinese, London-trained designer, she makes ethereal, dreamy womenswear built on her “Air-Weave” technique — a bead-and-bubble method that merges craft with technology — in gradient colour and 3D floral and bubble structures, drawn from fractals and geometry in nature.

Its identity is the air-weave. Susan Fang’s translucent, beaded, gradient pieces are the work she is known for. A technique, made a world. A designer who weaves with air.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Susan Fang is a Chinese designer trained at Central Saint Martins, who founded her brand in 2017; she is independent and founder-led, and shows between London and Shanghai (with a Milan debut for Fall 2025) — she was raised across China, Canada, the US and the UK, so we describe her simply as Chinese rather than pinning a single birthplace, and where her garments are made isn’t documented, so we don’t claim it. Her signature is the “Air-Weave” bead-and-bubble craft-tech technique, which we describe impressionistically rather than over-engineering the mechanism. She was a 2019 LVMH Prize semi-finalist, which is recognition, not ownership. A couple of corrections: her current site is susanfangofficial.com (an older domain now belongs to an unrelated illustrator), and her real collaborations include Nike, Melissa and Victoria’s Secret rather than some names often misattributed to her. Her techniques, pieces and wordmark are her IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Susan Fang lives in a lilac-and-mint palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Susan Fang’s identity is ethereal, dreamy and soft — a lilac, an ink, a mint, a peach, and a cloud. The palette leans lilac and mint: the register of gradient, translucent, dreamlike colour. It signals softness and craft-fantasy over hard edges. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a lilac-and-mint palette signals an ethereal identity. Susan Fang’s world is an ethereal, dreamy, soft object. For designers, it is a reminder that a gradient pastel palette can carry a brand built on airy, beaded craft — colours that feel like light through bubbles. Because pastels can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the discs, palette and band. The takeaways: build on a technique; keep the palette dreamy; blend craft and tech; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is an ethereal serif — delicate, dreamy, refined.

Susan Fang’s identity carries a delicate, dreamy, refined spirit — an ethereal object, not a hard one. An ethereal serif captures the mood: light, romantic and airy, the register of translucent, beaded craft. Set in a lilac-and-mint palette, the ethereal serif feels delicate and dreamy — exactly the personality Susan Fang carries. It is refined rather than bold, mirroring an airy, gradient piece. (Susan Fang’s real garments, techniques and wordmark are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “an ethereal-serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: delicate, dreamy and refined.

04

A signature technique as identity

Susan Fang stands for the air-weave.

Susan Fang is a lesson in making a technique the identity. A lilac-and-mint palette, an ethereal serif and airy, beaded pieces make the Air-Weave technique the whole brand — ethereal, dreamy and soft. The technique is the differentiator. The differentiator is a genuine signature method — a bead-and-bubble craft that merges hand-work and technology — so the clothes could only be hers.

Put to work, the identity is a technique as design. A designer building in this spirit would invent a real signature method and build a whole dreamlike world around it, letting craft and technology meet, so the customer buys into a technique and an atmosphere rather than a trend. The lesson Susan Fang teaches is that a genuine technique plus a clear world can build a brand: the Air-Weave gives it a signature, and the dreamy palette gives it atmosphere. The technique is the personality, and the craft is the proof.

For designers and brand-builders, Susan Fang offers a clear takeaway: invent a technique and build a world. The lessons: develop a real method; keep the world dreamy; blend craft and tech; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: Susan Fang is a Chinese, CSM-trained designer who founded her brand in 2017 and shows between London and Shanghai, independent, with a 2019 LVMH semi-final nod that is recognition not ownership — her real collaborations are Nike, Melissa and Victoria’s Secret, and her techniques are described but never reproduced, with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Susan Fang made the Air-Weave the brand — proof that a technique can be the difference.
