The shadow play of glass

Articolo makes mouth-blown glass lighting built on shadow play and striations of light.

Articolo is a lesson in glass and shadow as the identity. An Australian studio in Melbourne — now trading as Articolo Studios — it makes mouth-blown glass lighting built on “shadow play” and striations of light: tactile, sculptural pieces, with a companion furniture arm, Articolo Home. Glass, made atmosphere.

Its identity is the shadow play of glass. Articolo’s luminous, sculptural glass pieces are the work it is known for. A material, made light and shadow. A studio that sculpts with glow.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Articolo was founded in 2015 by Nicci Kavals and is independent and founder-led, based in Melbourne with a New York showroom; it marked a decade in business at Milan in 2025. Its lighting is handcrafted in Australia and made to order; while its glass is described as mouth-blown, where the glass itself is blown isn’t publicly specified, so we say “handcrafted in Australia” rather than claiming the glass is blown in Melbourne. Its signature is mouth-blown glass and shadow play, with confirmed collections including Fizi, Trilogy, Rolo and Oro. Its lights and wordmark are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Articolo lives in an amber-glass-and-smoke palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Articolo’s identity is warm, sculptural and atmospheric — an amber glass, an ink, a smoke, a bronze, and a sand. The palette leans amber glass and smoke: the register of mouth-blown glass, warm light and soft shadow. It signals atmosphere and material over decoration. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is an amber-glass-and-smoke palette signals a glass-lighting identity. Articolo’s world is a warm, sculptural, atmospheric object. For designers, it is a reminder that a palette of warm glass and soft smoke can carry a brand built on light and shadow. Because a mid amber can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: work in glass; design the shadow; keep it tactile; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a refined geometric — elegant, tactile, modern.

Articolo’s identity carries an elegant, tactile, modern spirit — a sculptural object, not a plain one. A refined geometric sans captures the mood: clean, considered and warm, the register of mouth-blown glass and light. Set in an amber-glass-and-smoke palette, the refined geometric feels elegant and tactile — exactly the personality Articolo carries. It is modern rather than fussy, mirroring a luminous glass fixture. (Articolo’s real lights and wordmark are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a refined-geometric spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: elegant, tactile and modern.

Glass and shadow as identity

Articolo stands for the shadow play of glass.

Articolo is a lesson in making glass and shadow the identity. An amber-glass-and-smoke palette, a refined geometric and mouth-blown glass make light and shadow the whole brand — warm, sculptural and atmospheric. The glass is the differentiator. The differentiator is a genuine material signature — mouth-blown glass designed for its striations and shadow play, handcrafted in Australia and made to order.

Put to work, the identity is a material as design. A studio building in this spirit would commit to glass and design the light and shadow as much as the form, so the customer buys into atmosphere rather than a fitting. The lesson Articolo teaches is that one material plus a clear effect can build a brand: the glass gives it craft, and the shadow play gives it atmosphere. The material is the personality, and the light is the proof.

For designers and brand-builders, Articolo offers a clear takeaway: design the light, not just the fixture. The lessons: commit to a material; design the shadow; keep it tactile; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: Articolo — now Articolo Studios — is an independent, founder-led Melbourne house (Nicci Kavals, founded 2015), handcrafting in Australia and made to order, with the exact origin of its blown glass unspecified, and the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Articolo made the shadow play of glass the brand — proof that a material can be the difference.

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Articolo’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Articolo (Articolo Studios), and it does not promote the purchase or use of any product. The Articolo name, wordmark and its light designs are trademarks/works of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and glass-texture swatches); no light or wordmark is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from public sources (articolostudios.com): Articolo is an independent Australian lighting studio in Melbourne (founded 2015 by Nicci Kavals; now trading as Articolo Studios) known for mouth-blown glass lighting and “shadow play.” Honest notes: its lighting is handcrafted in Australia and made to order, but where its glass is blown is not publicly specified (so it is described as “handcrafted in Australia,” not blown in Melbourne); confirmed collections include Fizi, Trilogy, Rolo and Oro. No official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
