The brass-craft light

Konsthantverk makes brass lighting by hand, in one Swedish workshop.

Konsthantverk is a lesson in heritage brass craft as the identity. A Swedish house from the town of Tyringe, it makes brass lighting by hand — “by hand, nothing else” — in a workshop with a long history.

Its identity is the brass-craft light. Konsthantverk’s solid-brass fixtures — classic archive pieces and contemporary designs, hand-finished with a “perfectly imperfect” character — are the work it is known for. Light in hand-worked brass. Craft, kept honest.

(Honest notes: Konsthantverk — full name Konsthantverk Tyringe — is a Swedish lighting maker in Tyringe, in Skåne, southern Sweden. Its own history dates the workshop to 1921, though some listings say around 1928, so we hedge the founding year; it is associated with the Bessfelt family, and the company changed hands, with a new owner buying it in 1980. Its signature is heritage brass craft — solid brass and metal, in a Scandinavian, “by hand, nothing else” spirit, mixing classic archive designs with contemporary work by designers like Sabina Grubbeson, across the pieces it is known for. On production, it is genuinely made in Sweden, in-house in Tyringe — milled, drilled, formed and finished on site, and it historically ran its own glassworks for lamp glass. It is an independent, family-run company. A couple of honest notes: the founding year is best hedged as the early twentieth century, and we don’t claim any Josef Frank link, which is unverified. Its fixture and collection names are IP we describe but don’t reproduce. There’s no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Konsthantverk lives in a blue-and-brass palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Konsthantverk’s identity is crafted, honest and Scandinavian — a Swedish blue, an ink, a brass, a graphite, and a chalk. The palette leans blue and brass — the register of a Swedish sensibility and hand-worked brass. It signals craft and restraint rather than novelty. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a blue-and-brass palette signals heritage brass craft. Konsthantverk’s world is a crafted, honest, Scandinavian object. For designers, it is a reminder that a craft and a place — brass, worked by hand in one Swedish workshop — can be the whole identity, and that a cool-and-warm-metal palette signals that heritage. Because a mid blue can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: keep the craft; own the workshop; embrace the imperfect; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a Scandi sans — clean, honest, understated.

Konsthantverk’s identity carries a clean, honest, understated spirit — a crafted, Scandinavian object. A clean, humanist Scandi sans captures the mood: it is calm and unpretentious, the register of honest craft. Set in a blue-and-brass palette, the Scandi sans feels clean and honest — exactly the personality Konsthantverk carries. It is understated rather than decorative, mirroring a hand-worked brass fixture. (Konsthantverk’s real fixtures and wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a Scandi sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: clean, honest and understated.

Heritage brass craft as identity

Konsthantverk stands for the brass-craft light.

Konsthantverk is a lesson in making a craft the identity. A blue-and-brass palette, a Scandi sans and a hand-worked brass fixture make heritage brass craft the whole brand — crafted, honest, Scandinavian. The craft is the differentiator. The differentiator is making everything by hand in one Swedish workshop: brass milled, formed and finished on site, with a “perfectly imperfect” character that machine production can’t fake.

Put to work, the identity is craft as design. A house building in this spirit would keep the making in one workshop, do it by hand, and let honesty — including the small imperfections of hand-work — be part of the appeal, so the object reads as genuine. The lesson Konsthantverk teaches is that owning a craft and a place can build a brand: an in-house Swedish workshop, an archive of classics, and a clean, understated design language give it a credibility that a designed-here-made-abroad brand can’t claim. The hand is the point, and the workshop is the proof.

For designers and brand-builders, Konsthantverk offers a clear takeaway: keep the craft and own the workshop. The lessons: make it by hand; own the making; embrace the imperfect; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: the founding year is best hedged (its own history says 1921, some listings say 1928), and there is no verified Josef Frank link — the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. And it is a reminder that made-where honesty can be a genuine boast: Konsthantverk makes in-house in Sweden, and that is worth stating plainly. Konsthantverk made the brass-craft light the brand — proof that a craft can be the difference.

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Konsthantverk’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Konsthantverk Tyringe AB, and it does not promote the purchase or use of any product. The Konsthantverk name, fixtures, collection names and wordmark are trademarks/works of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and texture swatches); no fixture or wordmark is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from public sources (konsthantverk.com): Konsthantverk is a Swedish lighting maker from Tyringe (its history dated to 1921, with some listings citing 1928) known for hand-made, solid-brass fixtures made in-house in Sweden. Honest notes: the founding year is hedged (1921 per its own history; some say 1928); it is genuinely made in-house in Tyringe; it is independent and family-run; there is no verified Josef Frank link; and no official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
