Diaspora, made luxury

Luar turns a Dominican-American identity into New York luxury.

Luar is a lesson in a personal identity as the brand. A New York label founded by Raul Lopez in Brooklyn, it takes his Dominican-American upbringing — the codes, the pride, the family story — and builds it into confident, sculptural luxury: tailoring, leather and an accessory line carried with unmistakable New York attitude.

Its identity is diaspora, made luxury. Luar’s sharply cut clothes and its now-signature handbag are the work it is known for. An identity, made an object. A house that says a first-generation story can be the height of luxury.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Luar was founded in 2011 by the Dominican-American designer Raul Lopez in Brooklyn — the name is “Raul” spelled backwards. Before Luar, Lopez was a co-founder of Hood By Air, which he left in 2010, so Luar is very much his second act and his own house. On honours: he won the CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year award twice — in 2022 and again in 2024 — so we cite both years rather than a single mistaken date. On ownership, an important nuance: Luar is independently run, not owned by a conglomerate; it has had incubation support associated with YFINY, tied to Kerby Jean-Raymond and Kering, but that is mentorship and backing, not ownership or control, so we do not describe it as “Kering-owned.” On production, its celebrated “Ana” handbag is made in China — part of an accessible-luxury story we report honestly rather than hide. The Ana bag’s look is protected trade dress; its clothes, the bag and the wordmark are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Luar lives in a bronze-and-wine palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Luar’s identity is rich, confident and nocturnal — a bronze, an ink, a wine, a graphite, and a bone. The palette leans bronze and wine: the register of gold-lit New York nights and deep, grown-up luxury. It signals pride and richness over minimalism. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a bronze-and-wine palette signals a luxury identity. Luar’s world is a rich, confident, nocturnal object. For designers, it is a reminder that a warm, deep palette can carry a brand about diaspora pride made aspirational — bronze for luxury, wine for depth, ink for the city at night. Because a mid bronze can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: build from your own story; keep the palette rich; carry it with confidence; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a confident serif — luxe, editorial, self-assured.

Luar’s identity carries a luxe, editorial, self-assured spirit — an aspirational object, not a modest one. A confident serif captures the mood: high-fashion, editorial and proud, the register of a luxury house that grew from a personal story. Set in a bronze-and-wine palette, the confident serif feels luxe and self-assured — exactly the personality Luar carries. It is aspirational rather than plain, mirroring sharp tailoring and a statement bag. (Luar’s real clothes, its Ana bag and its wordmark are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a confident-serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: luxe, editorial and self-assured.

A personal identity as brand

Luar stands for diaspora, made luxury.

Luar is a lesson in making a personal identity the brand. A bronze-and-wine palette, a confident serif and sharply cut, aspirational pieces make a Dominican-American story the whole house — rich, proud and self-assured. The identity is the differentiator. The differentiator is a genuine first-generation New York story, carried into luxury without apology — the codes of a community turned into tailoring and a signature bag.

Put to work, the identity is a story as design. A house building in this spirit would draw honestly on its founder’s life and community, and let that heritage set the tone, the pride and the confidence, so the customer buys into an identity and a point of view rather than a garment. The lesson Luar teaches is that a real personal story plus genuine craft and confidence can build a luxury brand: the identity gives it meaning, and the tailoring and the bag give it substance. The story is the personality, and the confidence is the proof.

For designers and brand-builders, Luar offers a clear takeaway: make your own story the luxury. The lessons: build from who you are; keep the palette rich; carry it with confidence; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: Luar was founded in 2011 by Raul Lopez, who left Hood By Air in 2010; it won the CFDA Accessories award in both 2022 and 2024; it is independently run with incubation support rather than Kering-owned; and its Ana bag is made in China — the bag and wordmark are described but never reproduced, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Luar made a diaspora identity the luxury — proof that a personal story can be the difference.

Honest notes: Lopez co-founded Hood By Air and left in 2010; he won the CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year award in 2022 and 2024; Luar is independently run with incubation support associated with YFINY/Kering (mentorship and backing, not ownership); and its Ana bag is made in China. The bag and wordmark are described but never reproduced. No official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
