Munekawa Brand Guidelines
The wallet specialist.

Two constants: an indigo palette and a minimal sans register. Abstract homage — not a Munekawa design or wordmark.
The wallet specialist
Munekawa is an independent Osaka atelier built on the minimalist, repairable Buttero-leather wallet.
Munekawa is a lesson in a small object done beautifully. A tiny Osaka atelier, it specialises in minimalist leather wallets and small goods in Italian Buttero leather, finished with hand-burnished edges and built with few seams so parts can be replaced and the piece repaired. Its answer to the specialist’s question is a wallet — thin, considered, and made to be kept, not replaced. A wallet, made to last and to mend.
Its identity is the wallet specialist. Munekawa’s minimalist wallets, its Buttero finish and its made-in-Osaka craft are the work it is known for. A small object, made a signature. A house whose whole art is a few grams of leather done right.
(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Munekawa was founded in 1999 by Yoshihiro Munekawa and is based in the Daikoku area of Naniwa-ku, Osaka — not Nara — an independent, founder-owned small atelier with its store directly above the workshop. It is genuinely made in Japan, in-house. Its headline material is Italian vegetable-tanned Buttero leather, given a proprietary heat-pressed finish, with bridle and shell cordovan on select lines. One accuracy note: its specialty is minimalist, repairable construction, not woven or braided leather. Its designs and product names are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
Munekawa lives in an indigo palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Munekawa’s identity is minimal, precise and Japanese — an indigo, an ink, a Buttero tan, a caramel, and a chalk. The palette leans indigo and Buttero: the register of a thin, hand-finished wallet in warm Italian leather. It signals restraint and craft over show. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.
The lesson is an indigo palette signals a minimal, precise identity. Munekawa’s world is a Buttero-leather, made-in-Osaka, repairable object. For designers, it is a reminder that a deep indigo and a warm Buttero tan can carry a brand built on one small object — the indigo of a Japanese restraint and the tan of a burnished edge. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: perfect a small object; make it at home; build it to be repaired; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a minimal sans — clean, quiet, exact.
Munekawa’s identity carries a clean, quiet, exact spirit — a minimal object, not a loud one. A minimal sans captures the mood: even, spare and calm, the register of a small Osaka atelier. Set in an indigo palette, the minimal sans feels clean and quiet — exactly the personality Munekawa carries. It is exact rather than showy, mirroring a thin, few-seam wallet. (Munekawa’s real designs and product names are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a minimal-sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the maker: clean, quiet and exact.

The specialist
Munekawa stands for the wallet specialist.
Munekawa is a lesson in perfecting a small object. An indigo palette, a minimal sans and Buttero wallets make one small thing the whole maker — minimal, precise and Japanese. The specialty is the differentiator. The differentiator is depth in a tiny field: a thin, few-seam wallet designed to be repaired rather than replaced, finished by hand to a standard most makers reserve for far larger goods.
Put to work, the identity is specialisation as design. A maker building in this spirit would choose one small object and refine it endlessly, keep the making in its own hands, and design for repair so the piece lasts, so the customer buys something to keep for decades. It would treat the burnished edge as the signature. It would keep the atelier small enough to control every piece. The lesson Munekawa teaches is that a small object can build a brand: the focus gives it integrity, and the Osaka craft gives it substance. The specialty is the personality, and the repairability is the proof.
For designers and brand-builders, Munekawa belongs to this round about the specialist: perfect one small object, and design it to last. The lessons: choose a small field; make it at home; design for repair; and never reproduce a protected design. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Munekawa is an independent Osaka atelier founded in 1999 by Yoshihiro Munekawa, making minimalist, repairable Buttero-leather wallets in Japan — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Munekawa made the wallet the maker — proof that a small object done right can be the difference.
