The designer retrofit lock

August is the Yves Béhar–designed retrofit smart lock that fits over your existing deadbolt, now a Fortune Brands brand in North America.

August brings the smart-lock round its design-forward node — the startup that made the smart lock a designer object and a simple retrofit. It was founded in 2012 in San Francisco by Jason Johnson and the industrial designer Yves Béhar, and it makes and sells smart locks. Its answer to a round about who owns these devices is a case study in the reshuffle: a startup absorbed by a Swedish giant, then handed to an American one.

Its identity is the designer retrofit lock. The Yves Béhar design pedigree, the retrofit innovation and the Fortune Brands ownership are the story here. A lock, designed. The designer retrofit lock.

(Honest notes, so the design, the ownership and the manufacturing are framed accurately. August sells the locks as its heroes — the August Smart Lock, the Smart Lock Pro and the compact Wi-Fi Smart Lock — and we report its language as the brand’s own. On design, a genuine and citable point: it was co-founded by Yves Béhar of fuseproject, who led the product design, so the design pedigree is real, not marketing. On the innovation, which is the signature: August is a retrofit lock that mounts on the interior over the existing deadbolt and motorizes the existing thumb-turn, so the exterior hardware and physical keys are unchanged — a DIY install in minutes. On ownership, told straight: August was acquired by ASSA ABLOY in 2017, becoming a sister brand to Yale rather than “becoming Yale,” and then in 2023 the US and Canadian August residential smart-lock business moved to Fortune Brands Innovations, as a pair with Yale, under a competition remedy, so in North America August is a Fortune Brands brand. On where it is made: reported as China or Asia, which we hedge as not officially confirmed. Its designs, the August name and its circular-disc form are IP we describe but do not reproduce; there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

August lives in a designer graphite. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

August’s identity is design-forward, retrofit and simple — a designer graphite, an ink, a pale steel, a deep slate, and a paper. The palette leans designer graphite and pale steel: a refined, neutral register that nods to considered industrial design rather than a loud logo colour. It signals the designer retrofit lock — designed, simple and unobtrusive. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a designer graphite signals a design-forward identity. August’s world is a small, well-designed disc that clicks onto the deadbolt you already have. For designers, it is a reminder that a refined designer graphite and a soft pale steel can carry a maker brand — a considered tone held as colour, not a product shot. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: date it to 2012; credit Yves Béhar; lead with the retrofit design; tell the ASSA-ABLOY-then-Fortune-Brands ownership; and hedge the manufacturing.

Typography

The register is a designer sans — designed, simple, unobtrusive.

August’s identity carries a designed, simple, unobtrusive spirit — a design-led product, not a security appliance. A designer sans captures the mood: clean, refined and confident, the register of a considered object that hides on the door. Set in a designer-graphite palette, the designer sans feels designed and unobtrusive — exactly the personality August carries. It behaves like a designed object rather than a loud logo, mirroring a circular disc and a circuit board. (August’s real locks, the disc form and the name are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a designer-sans brand,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: designed, simple and unobtrusive.

The smart lock

August stands for the designer retrofit lock.

August brings the round its design-forward node. A designer-graphite palette, a designer sans and a 2012 founding make one thing — the designer retrofit lock — the whole identity: design-forward, retrofit and simple. The Yves Béhar design pedigree is the pitch, and the retrofit innovation is the proof. The point is the startup that made the smart lock a designer object, in a round about who owns these devices.

Put to work, the identity is the brand told straight, the design credited and the ownership traced. A maker in this spirit would date it to 2012, credit Yves Béhar, and lead with the retrofit design. A reader in this spirit would keep the facts right: August sells the Smart Lock and Smart Lock Pro as its heroes; it was co-founded in 2012 by Jason Johnson and Yves Béhar; its retrofit mounts over the existing deadbolt; it was acquired by ASSA ABLOY in 2017 and its US and Canadian residential business moved to Fortune Brands in 2023; and it is reported to be made in China. August sits second in the round, after Yale. The honest editorial moves are to date it to 2012, to credit Béhar, to lead with the retrofit, to trace the ASSA-ABLOY-then-Fortune-Brands ownership, and to hedge the manufacturing.

For designers and brand-builders, August continues the smart lock: make design and retrofit the identity — and trace an ownership that changed hands twice. The lessons: hire a real designer and make it part of the story; solve installation with a retrofit that keeps the existing hardware; trace an ownership that moved from startup to Swedish giant to American one; credit a design collaborator accurately; and never reproduce a logo or a product form. It is also a reminder to stay precise: August is the Yves Béhar–designed retrofit smart lock that fits over your existing deadbolt, now a Fortune Brands brand in North America — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. The hook is that journey: a San Francisco startup with a famous designer made the smart lock a small, elegant disc that clips onto the deadbolt you already own — then got bought by ASSA ABLOY, then handed to Fortune Brands in North America, a designer object passed between conglomerates. Read that way, August is less a startup than a designed lock in play: designed, simple, unobtrusive. The lesson for a brand is that design leadership and honest ownership reinforce each other, and tracing the two sales keeps the story earned. August made the-designer-retrofit-lock the identity — proof that design carries a round.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about August’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, August, ASSA ABLOY or Fortune Brands. The August name and its designs are IP of their owners — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and circular-disc / circuit-board texture swatches); no lock, disc or logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported: August (August Home / August, Inc.) was founded in November 2012 in San Francisco by Jason Johnson (CEO) and industrial designer Yves Béhar (fuseproject, who led the product design); its heroes are the August Smart Lock, Smart Lock Pro and Wi-Fi Smart Lock, whose signature is a retrofit design that mounts over the existing interior deadbolt (keeping the exterior hardware and physical keys); it was acquired by ASSA ABLOY in 2017 (as a sister brand to Yale), and in June 2023 the US and Canadian August residential smart-lock business moved to Fortune Brands Innovations (paired with Yale, under a DOJ antitrust remedy). Honest notes: ⚠ August did not “become Yale” — they are sister brands under common ownership; ⚠ in North America August is now a Fortune Brands brand (ASSA ABLOY elsewhere); ⚠ manufacturing is reported as China/Asia but not officially confirmed; the Yves Béhar design pedigree is genuine; the circular-disc product form is treated as trade dress. No official brand hex is used, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
