Catellani & Smith Brand Guidelines
The handcrafted light.

Two constants: a gold-and-ink palette and an elegant serif register. Abstract homage — not a Catellani & Smith fixture or wordmark.
The handcrafted light
Catellani & Smith treats light as poetry, worked by hand in brass and gold leaf.
Catellani & Smith is a lesson in poetic handcraft as the identity. An Italian house from the hills near Bergamo, it makes “light, not lamps” — hand-wrought, imperfect, luminous objects.
Its identity is the handcrafted light. Catellani & Smith’s fixtures — raw brass, gold and silver leaf, deliberately artisanal finishes that play light against shadow — are the work it is known for. Light as sculpture. The hand, left visible.
(Honest notes: Catellani & Smith is an Italian lighting maker in Villa di Serio, in the province of Bergamo, Lombardy — not Bergamo city itself — founded in 1989 by Enzo Catellani, born 1950. Its signature is poetic handcraft: a “light, not lamps” philosophy, hand-wrought raw brass with gold and silver leaf, and finishes left imperfect so the light and shadow do the work, across pieces the house is known for. On production, it is handcrafted in Italy, in the company’s own Villa di Serio workshops along the Serio river — its own words are that the lamps are “still made by hand today.” It is an independent, family-run, founder-led company. One thing to keep straight: “Smith” is not a person and not a co-founder — it was the name of Catellani’s horse, Logan Smith, adopted as a tongue-in-cheek pseudonym, so we don’t imply a partner. And it was founded in 1989, not the late 1970s, when Catellani merely began working with light. Its named fixtures are IP we describe but don’t reproduce. There’s no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
Catellani & Smith lives in a gold-and-ink palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Catellani & Smith’s identity is warm, poetic and handmade — a gold, an ink, a warm grey, a graphite, and a chalk. The palette leans gold and ink — the register of gold leaf glowing out of darkness. It signals craft and atmosphere rather than novelty. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a gold-and-ink palette signals handcrafted light. Catellani & Smith’s world is a warm, poetic, handmade object. For designers, it is a reminder that a material and a philosophy — gold leaf, and “light not lamps” — can be the whole identity, and that a gold-against-dark palette signals that atmosphere. Because a mid gold can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: light the material; leave the hand visible; own the making; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is an elegant serif — poetic, warm, refined.
Catellani & Smith’s identity carries a poetic, warm, refined spirit — an artisanal, atmospheric object. An elegant serif captures the mood: it is graceful and expressive, the register of light treated as poetry. Set in a gold-and-ink palette, the elegant serif feels poetic and warm — exactly the personality Catellani & Smith carries. It is expressive rather than technical, mirroring a hand-wrought light. (Catellani & Smith’s real fixtures and wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “an elegant serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: poetic, warm and refined.

Poetic handcraft as identity
Catellani & Smith stands for the handcrafted light.
Catellani & Smith is a lesson in making handcraft the identity. A gold-and-ink palette, an elegant serif and a hand-wrought fixture make poetic handcraft the whole brand — warm, poetic, handmade. The hand is the differentiator. The differentiator is a philosophy made physical: “light, not lamps,” worked in brass and gold leaf, finished imperfectly so each piece is its own.
Put to work, the identity is craft as design. A designer building in this spirit would treat the material as the subject — letting gold leaf, raw brass and honest imperfection carry the object, and keeping the making in-house so the hand stays visible. The lesson Catellani & Smith teaches is that a material philosophy plus genuine craft can build a brand: an own workshop, a poetic point of view, and a warm, expressive design language give it an identity a mass-produced fixture cannot fake. It sells atmosphere, not just illumination.
For designers and brand-builders, Catellani & Smith offers a clear takeaway: let the material and the hand carry the light. The lessons: light the material; leave the hand visible; own the making; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: “Smith” was the founder’s horse, not a partner, and the house began in 1989, in Villa di Serio, not Bergamo city — the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. And it is a reminder that made-where honesty can be a genuine boast: Catellani & Smith is handmade in its own Italian workshops, and that is worth stating plainly. Catellani & Smith made the handcrafted light the brand — proof that craft can be the difference.
