The brass light

Bert Frank machines solid brass into Deco-industrial fixtures.

Bert Frank is a lesson in machined brass as the identity. A British house, it makes lighting from solid brass — machined and knurled, where Art Deco meets the machine shop.

Its identity is the brass light. Bert Frank’s sand-cast brass and hand-blown glass fixtures — precise, knurled, industrial and elegant at once — are the work it is known for. Light in solid brass. Deco, engineered.

(Honest notes: Bert Frank is a British lighting brand founded in 2013 by Robbie Llewellyn, a product designer, and Adam Yeats, from metalwork and fabrication. Its signature is machined Deco brass — solid, sand-cast brass with hand-blown glass and machined, knurled industrial details, in an Art-Deco-meets-industrial-modern style, across the collections it is known for. On production, it is made in the UK, in Birmingham, in a family-run factory with decades of lighting manufacture — Adam originally owned the fabrication plant — combining traditional methods with CNC and laser work, so it is a genuine UK own-manufacture. Its design studio has historically been in London while the making is in Birmingham, so we soften any single-HQ claim. One honest note on the name: “Bert Frank” is not named after grandfathers, as is sometimes said — it is an amalgamation of Robbie’s own names, Bert from Robert and Frank from Francis. It is independent and founder-owned. Its collection names are IP we describe but don’t reproduce. There’s no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Bert Frank lives in a brass-and-smoke palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Bert Frank’s identity is precise, luxe and industrial — a brass, an ink, a smoke, a graphite, and a bone. The palette leans brass and smoke — the register of warm machined metal against smoked glass. It signals precision and craft rather than novelty. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a brass-and-smoke palette signals machined brass. Bert Frank’s world is a precise, luxe, industrial object. For designers, it is a reminder that a material and a technique — solid brass, machined and knurled — can be the whole identity, and that a warm-metal-and-smoke palette signals that precision. Because a mid brass can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: machine the metal; add the detail; own the making; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a Deco serif — elegant, precise, confident.

Bert Frank’s identity carries an elegant, precise, confident spirit — a machined, luxe object. A high-contrast Deco serif captures the mood: it is refined and bold, the register of Art-Deco precision. Set in a brass-and-smoke palette, the Deco serif feels elegant and confident — exactly the personality Bert Frank carries. It is engineered rather than plain, mirroring a machined brass fixture. (Bert Frank’s real fixtures and wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a Deco serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: elegant, precise and confident.

Machined brass as identity

Bert Frank stands for the brass light.

Bert Frank is a lesson in making a material and a technique the identity. A brass-and-smoke palette, a Deco serif and a machined fixture make solid brass the whole brand — precise, luxe, industrial. The making is the differentiator. The differentiator is craft plus machine: solid, sand-cast brass, machined and knurled in a Birmingham factory, where Art Deco elegance meets industrial precision.

Put to work, the identity is material and manufacture as design. A designer building in this spirit would choose one substantial material, master both traditional and machine techniques for it, and own the making, so the details — a knurl, a precise joint — become the brand’s signature. The lesson Bert Frank teaches is that owning the metalwork can build a brand: a family factory, solid-brass construction, and a precise, Deco design language give it a credibility a designed-here-made-abroad brand can’t claim. The precision is the product, and the brass is the proof.

For designers and brand-builders, Bert Frank offers a clear takeaway: own the material and the machining. The lessons: choose a substantial material; master the technique; own the factory; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: the name is an amalgamation of Robbie Llewellyn’s own names, not a tribute to grandfathers, and the studio is in London while the making is in Birmingham — the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. And it is a reminder that made-where honesty can be a genuine boast: Bert Frank makes its brass in the UK, and that is worth stating plainly. Bert Frank made the brass light the brand — proof that a material can be the difference.
