The sustainability-led SUP maker

Starboard is the founder-led SUP and windsurf maker, made in Thailand, with a documented sustainability programme.

Starboard closes the round with the sustainability specialist — the founder-led board brand, from 1994, that makes stand-up paddleboards, windsurf and wing-foil boards and paddles, based and made in Thailand, and runs a documented environmental programme as a certified B Corp. Starboard makes boards, and its answer to a round about the paddle is a board with a mission — a performance SUP, made in Thailand, from a brand that measures its footprint. A brand, sustainable.

Its identity is the sustainability-led SUP maker. The board range, the Thailand making and the sustainability programme are the story here. A brand, sustainable. The sustainability-led SUP maker.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise, and the claims stay the brand’s own and third-party. Starboard, at star-board.com, makes stand-up paddleboards, both hard and inflatable, windsurf and wing-foil boards and paddles, with its performance SUP as a hero, and we report its performance and sustainability language as the brand’s own marketing and third-party certification. It was founded in 1994 by Svein Rasmussen, and is based in Thailand. On where it is made, the star theme of this round, it makes at its own base in Thailand. On who owns it, a theme of this round, it is independent and founder-led, and a certified B Corporation; its sustainability programme — carbon-neutral operations, ocean-plastic collection and mangrove restoration — is documented, and we report it as the brand’s own and third-party, not something we grant. Its designs are IP we describe but do not reproduce; there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

Starboard lives in an ocean teal. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Starboard’s identity is sustainable, board and made — an ocean teal, an ink, a pale aqua, a deep teal, and a paper. The palette leans ocean teal and pale aqua: a sea, mission register that nods to a board on the water and an environmental programme rather than a loud logo colour. It signals a sustainability-led maker. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is an ocean teal signals a sustainable, board identity. Starboard’s world is a made, mission-driven object. For designers, it is a reminder that an ocean teal and a soft pale aqua can carry a board brand — the tone of sea and mission. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: make the board; run the programme; report claims as marketing and certification; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a sustainable-SUP sans — sustainable, plain, board.

Starboard’s identity carries a sustainable, plain, board spirit — a mission-driven maker, not a graphics label. A sustainable-SUP sans captures the mood: clean, oceanic and confident, the register of a board with a mission. Set in an ocean-teal palette, the sustainable-SUP sans feels sustainable and board — exactly the personality Starboard carries. It is a made object rather than a logo, mirroring a SUP board. (Starboard’s real boards are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a sustainable-SUP-sans maker,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: sustainable, plain and board.

The paddle

Starboard stands for the sustainability-led SUP maker.

Starboard closes the paddle round with the sustainability specialist. An ocean-teal palette, a sustainable-SUP sans and a Thailand base make one thing — the sustainability-led SUP maker — the whole identity: sustainable, board and made. The board range is the pitch, and the sustainability programme is the mission. The point is a performance SUP, made in Thailand, from a brand that measures its footprint.

Put to work, the identity is a mission told straight, as making — with the making stated and the programme framed as the brand’s own and third-party. A maker in this spirit would make the board, run the programme, and report claims as marketing and certification. A reader in this spirit would keep the facts right: Starboard makes stand-up paddleboards, both hard and inflatable, windsurf and wing-foil boards and paddles, its performance SUP a hero; it was founded in 1994 by Svein Rasmussen and is based in Thailand; it makes at its own base in Thailand; and it is independent and founder-led, a certified B Corporation, with a documented sustainability programme — carbon-neutral operations, ocean-plastic collection and mangrove restoration — reported as the brand’s own and third-party. Starboard closes the round’s independent, B-Corp thread with Red Paddle Co, and brings the round its Thai geography and its sustainability mission. The honest editorial moves are to date it to 1994, to credit Svein Rasmussen, to say it is made in Thailand, and to report the sustainability programme as the brand’s own and third-party, not granted.

For designers and brand-builders, Starboard completes the paddle: make the board — and run the programme. The lessons: let a board range and a mission be the brand; keep the making stated and say where; report sustainability language as the brand’s own and third-party certification, not self-granted; treat founder-led independence as part of the story; and never reproduce a board. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Starboard is the founder-led SUP and windsurf maker, made in Thailand, with a documented sustainability programme — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Read that way, Starboard is less a board than a sustainable making: teal, in Thailand. The lesson for a brand is that a board range and an honest mission reinforce each other, and reporting the programme as third-party keeps the story earned. Starboard made the-sustainability-led-SUP-maker the identity — proof that a mission can carry a brand, and the round’s closing argument that where a board is made and how it is made are both worth saying.

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Starboard’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Starboard. The Starboard name and its designs are IP of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and SUP-board texture swatches); no board silhouette or logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from the maker’s site (star-board.com) and public record: Starboard makes stand-up paddleboards (hard and inflatable), windsurf and wing-foil boards and paddles (hero = its performance SUP); founded 1994 by Svein Rasmussen, based in Thailand. Honest notes: ⭐ it makes at its own base in Thailand; ⚠ it is independent and founder-led, and a certified B Corporation; its documented sustainability programme — carbon-neutral operations, ocean-plastic collection and mangrove restoration — is reported as the brand’s own and third-party, not something we grant; all performance language is the brand’s own marketing. No official brand hex is used, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
