The Mother-Collective deck brand

Quasi Skateboards is the art-driven deck brand that grew out of Mother and is self-distributed under the Mother Collective.

Quasi Skateboards brings the indie round its art-collective brand — the art-driven deck company that grew out of the earlier brand Mother and is self-distributed under a Mother Collective, rather than owned by a major conglomerate. Quasi makes and sells the decks, and its answer to a round about independence is a small collective that runs its own distribution. A brand, collective.

Its identity is the Mother-Collective deck brand. The Mother lineage, the self-distributed collective and the art-driven identity are the story here. A brand, collective. The Mother-Collective deck brand.

(Honest notes, so the lineage is verified, and a founder is corrected. Quasi Skateboards sells skateboard decks as its heroes, art-driven ones, and we report its performance language as the brand’s own. On how it is run, the star point of this round, its own storefront’s code references a Mother Collective entity, which corroborates that Quasi grew out of the earlier Mother brand and is self-distributed under that collective — so it is independent, not owned by a large conglomerate. On its founder, a correction we make carefully: it is widely attributed to Chad Bowers, the creative lead of Mother and then Quasi, and not to Jake Johnson, who is a prominent associated rider rather than the documented founder — so we credit Bowers as widely attributed and do not name Johnson as founder. Its founding year, around 2015 as Mother’s successor, and its exact base, with a lineage tracing to Dayton, Ohio, we could not confirm, so we hold those open. We disambiguate it as Quasi Skateboards. Its designs are IP we describe but do not reproduce; there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

Quasi lives in a Quasi taupe. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Quasi’s identity is collective, art-driven and muted — a Quasi taupe, an ink, a pale sand, a deep umber, and a paper. The palette leans Quasi taupe and pale sand: a muted, arty register that nods to the brand’s understated, painterly world rather than a loud logo colour. It signals a Mother-Collective deck brand. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a Quasi taupe signals a collective, art-driven identity. Quasi’s world is an art-driven deck under a small collective. For designers, it is a reminder that a Quasi taupe and a soft pale sand can carry a skate brand — a muted tone held as colour not as a graphic. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: name the Mother Collective; credit Bowers as widely attributed; hold the year and base open; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a collective serif — collective, editorial, art-driven.

Quasi’s identity carries a collective, editorial, art-driven spirit — a small art collective, not a graphics label. A collective serif captures the mood: refined, painterly and confident, the register of an art-driven brand. Set in a Quasi-taupe palette, the collective serif feels collective and art-driven — exactly the personality Quasi carries. It is a made deck rather than a logo, mirroring maple veneer. (Quasi’s real decks, graphics and logo are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a collective-serif brand,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: collective, editorial and art-driven.

The indie

Quasi Skateboards stands for the Mother-Collective deck brand.

Quasi Skateboards brings the indie round its art-collective brand. A Quasi-taupe palette, a collective serif and a Mother lineage make one thing — the Mother-Collective deck brand — the whole identity: collective, art-driven and muted. The self-distributed collective is the pitch, and the Mother lineage is the proof. The point is a small collective running its own distribution, in a round about independence.

Put to work, the identity is the brand told straight, lineage verified and founder corrected. A maker in this spirit would name the Mother Collective, credit Bowers as widely attributed, and hold the year and base open. A reader in this spirit would keep the facts right: Quasi Skateboards sells art-driven skateboard decks as its heroes; its storefront references a Mother Collective entity, corroborating that it grew out of Mother and is self-distributed under that collective, so it is independent, not conglomerate-owned; its founder is widely attributed to Chad Bowers, not Jake Johnson; and its founding year, around 2015, and its base, with a Dayton, Ohio lineage, are held open. Quasi sits among the round’s collective and art-driven indies, after April. The honest editorial moves are to name the Mother Collective, to correct the founder to Bowers as widely attributed, to hold the year and base open, and to keep the art-driven framing.

For designers and brand-builders, Quasi continues the indie: name the collective — and correct a mis-attributed founder. The lessons: let a small collective carry an indie identity; name the collective that distributes it; correct a widely-repeated founder error to the documented name; hold an unconfirmed year and base open; and never reproduce a mark. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Quasi Skateboards is the art-driven deck brand that grew out of Mother and is self-distributed under the Mother Collective — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Read that way, Quasi is less a deck than an art collective: collective, art-driven, muted. The lesson for a brand is that a verified lineage and a corrected founder reinforce each other, and crediting Bowers as attributed keeps the story earned. Quasi made the-Mother-Collective-deck-brand the identity — proof that independence carries the round.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Quasi Skateboards’ visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Quasi Skateboards. The Quasi name and its designs are IP of their owners — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and maple-veneer texture swatches); no deck, graphic or logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from the brand’s own storefront: Quasi Skateboards sells art-driven skateboard decks as its heroes; its storefront references a “Mother Collective” entity, corroborating that it grew out of the earlier Mother brand and is self-distributed under that collective (independent, not conglomerate-owned). Honest notes: ⚠ its founder is widely attributed to Chad Bowers (creative lead of Mother, then Quasi), NOT Jake Johnson (a prominent associated rider) — so Bowers is credited as widely attributed and Johnson is not named as founder; ⚠ the founding year (~2015) and exact base (a Dayton, Ohio lineage) could not be confirmed and are held open; all performance language is the brand’s own. No official brand hex is used, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
