Newby Brand Guidelines
The ornate caddy.
Aa
Two constants: a jewel-teal-and-gold palette and a luxury didone register. Abstract homage — not the Newby packaging.
The ornate caddy
Newby dressed modern tea in old-world opulence.
Newby is a lesson in opulence as identity. Founded in 2000 in London by Nirmal Sethia, a master tea taster, it set out to revive the appreciation of fine tea — and wrapped it in a richly decorative, old-world luxury look, even though the brand itself is modern.
Its identity is the ornate caddy: richly decorated caddies and tins with intricate patterning, silken pyramid tea bags, and placement in luxury hotels and stores. The heritage-luxury look deliberately borrows the register of the Chitra Collection — Sethia’s collection of nearly 2,000 historic teawares, created in 2011 and named after his late wife, Chitra. The design credentials are real: Newby’s packaging has won prizes at the DBA Design Effectiveness Awards and the Pentawards.
(Honest notes: Newby is a modern brand — founded in 2000 — not a centuries-old house, however old-world it looks. It’s not simply family-owned: it’s substantially owned by a British-registered charity, the N. Sethia Foundation, so profits fund charitable work. “Chitra” is Sethia’s late wife, after whom the teaware collection is named. There’s no official brand hex, so these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)
Colour
Newby lives in a jewel-teal-and-gold palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Newby’s identity is opulent, decorative and luxurious — a jewel teal, an ink, a Newby gold, a crimson, and a cream. The palette pairs a jewel teal with a gold, with a crimson accent — the register of an ornate caddy. It signals luxury and decoration rather than restraint. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a jewel teal with a gold signals ornate tea luxury. Newby’s world is a richly patterned caddy. For designers, it is a reminder that a jewel tone with gold reads as opulent and collectible — right for a brand selling luxury. The takeaways: pair a jewel tone with gold; lean into decorative pattern; make the caddy a keepsake; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a luxury didone — opulent, refined, decorative.
Newby’s identity carries an opulent, refined, decorative spirit — an ornate caddy and a historic teaware collection. A high-contrast luxury didone captures the mood: it is elegant and formal, the register of heritage luxury. Set in a jewel-teal-and-gold palette, the luxury didone feels opulent and refined — exactly the personality Newby projects. It is decorative rather than plain, mirroring a patterned caddy. (Newby’s real caddies and packaging are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a luxury didone spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: opulent, refined and decorative.

Opulence as identity
Newby stands for modern tea in old-world dress.
Newby is a lesson in making opulence the identity. A jewel-teal-and-gold palette, a luxury didone and an ornate caddy make decoration the whole brand — opulent, refined, decorative. The opulence is the differentiator. The differentiator is a heritage-luxury, collectible-caddy identity.
For designers and brand-builders, Newby offers a clear takeaway: art direction can build a heritage aura. The lessons: pair a jewel tone with gold; use rich pattern with intent; borrow a real reference (the Chitra Collection); and be honest about the age and ownership. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it’s a modern brand from 2000, it’s charity-owned, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Newby dressed modern tea in old-world opulence — proof that art direction, honestly understood, can be the difference.
