Wood, stone, bean

Rolf builds frames from wood, stone and castor beans.

Rolf is a lesson in material honesty as identity. Founded around 2008–2009 by Roland Wolf and family in Weißenbach am Lech, Tyrol, it is an independent, family-run maker where everything is handmade in the Austrian Alps. (The name “ROLF” is a play on the family surname Wolf — not a person called Rolf.)

Its identity is radical natural-material construction, across three pillars: wood and bamboo (layered veneer, with a wooden hinge and glass-fixing system that avoids metal and plastic entirely); natural stone (slate, each frame unique); and “Substance” — a 3-D-printed bioplastic made from powdered castor beans. Its patented, screwless “Flexlock” hinge can be printed in the same batch as the frame. The design language is natural, alpine and quietly minimal, with two Red Dot 2025 wins and a BIG SEE award.

(Honest notes: “ROLF” comes from the family surname Wolf. The three materials are wood, stone and bean — and crucially, “Substance” is the castor-bean bioplastic, not the stone line. The founding is best given as ~2008–2009. Design is family/in-house (Johannes Wacker on the plant-based line) — no external agency — and there’s no official brand hex, so these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Rolf lives in a wood-and-slate palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Rolf’s identity is natural, alpine and honest — an ink, a wood, a slate, a moss, and a sand. The palette reads like the materials themselves — warm wood, grey slate, alpine moss — the register of a natural-material maker. It signals craft and honesty rather than fashion. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is wood, slate and moss signal natural-material honesty. Rolf’s world is the raw material, shaped. For designers, it is a reminder that a palette drawn from real materials reads as honest and crafted — right for a wood-stone-bean maker. The takeaways: source the palette from the materials; keep it earthy and alpine; let the construction show; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a natural serif — crafted, honest, alpine.

Rolf’s identity carries a crafted, honest, alpine spirit — raw materials and quiet minimalism. A natural serif captures the mood: it is warm and characterful, the register of handmade craft. Set in a wood-and-slate palette, the natural serif feels crafted and honest — exactly the personality Rolf carries. It is alpine rather than glossy, mirroring frames of wood, stone and bean. (Rolf’s real frames and “rolf.” wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a natural serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: crafted, honest and alpine.

Material honesty as identity

Rolf stands for frames made of the earth.

Rolf is a lesson in making material honesty the identity. A wood-and-slate palette, a natural serif and three natural materials make honest construction the whole brand — crafted, alpine, sustainable. The materials are the differentiator. The differentiator is a wood-stone-bean, screwless identity.

For designers and brand-builders, Rolf offers a clear takeaway: let honest materials be the brand. The lessons: build from real substances (wood, stone, castor bean); engineer the details (the screwless Flexlock hinge); keep the language quiet and alpine; and let awards validate it (Red Dot, BIG SEE). It is also a reminder to stay accurate: “ROLF” is from the surname Wolf, “Substance” is the bean line, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Rolf made material honesty the brand — proof that what it’s made of can be the difference.

The Rolf name and frames are trademarks/works of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and swatches); no frame is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from public sources (rolf-spectacles.com, Dezeen, The Eyewear Forum, Optician, Red Dot): Rolf (styled “rolf.”) is an independent, family-run Austrian eyewear maker (ROLF – Roland Wolf GmbH) founded around 2008–2009 by Roland Wolf and family in Weißenbach am Lech, Tyrol, where everything is handmade; the name is a play on the family surname Wolf. Its identity is radical natural-material construction across three pillars — wood/bamboo (layered veneer with a wooden hinge and glass-fixing system that avoids metal and plastic), natural stone (slate), and “Substance,” a 3-D-printed bioplastic made from powdered castor beans (plant-based line, designer Johannes Wacker) — with a patented, screwless “Flexlock” hinge and Red Dot 2025 and BIG SEE 2025 awards; the wordmark is “rolf.” with the tagline “Naturally handmade.” Honest notes: “ROLF” comes from the family surname Wolf (not a person called Rolf); the three materials are wood, stone and bean, and “Substance” is the castor-bean bioplastic (not the stone line); the founding is best given as ~2008–2009; design is family/in-house (no external agency); and no official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
