The moon face

Sarpaneva carved a brooding face into the moon.

Sarpaneva is a lesson in a signature so strong it becomes the logo. Founded in 2003 in Helsinki by independent watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva — an AHCI member trained at WOSTEP who worked for Piaget, Parmigiani and Christophe Claret — it is a small haute-horology house (now trading as StudioSarpaneva). These are hand-made, very limited, and priced accordingly.

Its identity is the “moon face” moonphase: a distinctive, brooding human face on the moon, said to represent Stepan himself — and now his signature mark. It sits within skeletonised, layered, sculptural dials in a “nouveau-Gothic,” Nordic-mystic register, framed by a serrated “korona” (crown) bezel and glowing with a strong nocturnal lume. The design runs in the family: his uncle was Timo Sarpaneva, the celebrated Iittala glass designer, and his father Pentti a noted jewellery artist.

(Honest notes: Sarpaneva is haute horology — very limited and expensive, not a cheap microbrand — and distinct from his affordable S.U.F Helsinki sister brand. The signature is the moon face (now the logo); “Nocturne” is the nocturnal-lume theme, not a confirmed model. Design is Stepan himself (no external studio), and there’s no official brand hex, so these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

Sarpaneva lives in a silver-moon-and-nocturne palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Sarpaneva’s identity is dark, celestial and mystic — an ink, a silver moon, a nocturne blue, a lume green, and a slate. The palette pairs a silver moon with a deep nocturne blue — the register of a celestial, night-glowing watch. It signals mystery and craft rather than colour. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a silver moon on deep nocturne blue signals celestial mystique. Sarpaneva’s world is a face in the moon at night. For designers, it is a reminder that dark, celestial colour reads as mystic and crafted — right for a moon-face maker. The takeaways: build the palette from the theme (moon, night, lume); keep it dark and sculptural; let one signature carry it; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a celestial serif — mystic, sculptural, dark.

Sarpaneva’s identity carries a mystic, sculptural, dark spirit — a moon face and a night glow. A celestial serif captures the mood: it is grand and Gothic, the register of a Nordic-mystic watch. Set in a silver-moon-and-nocturne palette, the celestial serif feels mystic and sculptural — exactly the personality Sarpaneva carries. It is dark rather than bright, mirroring layered nocturnal dials. (Sarpaneva’s real watches and moon-face mark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a celestial serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: mystic, sculptural and dark.

04

A signature as identity

Sarpaneva stands for a face in the moon.

Sarpaneva is a lesson in making a signature the identity. A silver-moon-and-nocturne palette, a celestial serif and a brooding moon face make one unforgettable cue the whole brand — mystic, sculptural, singular. The moon face is the differentiator. The differentiator is a moon-face, nocturnal identity.

For designers and brand-builders, Sarpaneva offers a clear takeaway: make one cue so strong it becomes the logo. The lessons: create a signature (the moon face); root it in the self and the theme (Stepan, the night); build sculptural, layered dials around it; and let a design family lineage add depth. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it’s haute horology, distinct from S.U.F, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Sarpaneva made a signature the brand — proof that one cue can be the difference.
