The rotating planet

Ciga Design made the Earth itself the hour hand.

Ciga Design is a lesson in design as the whole brand. Founded in 2016 by industrial designer Zhang Jianmin in Shenzhen, it is billed as “China’s first designer watch brand,” with a Bauhaus ethos — “good products for the greatest number.”

Its identity is bold, skeletonised, architectural design, and its landmark is the “Blue Planet.” The dial is a 3D micro-engraved globe (inspired by the 1972 “Blue Marble” photograph), and — the radical idea — the rotating globe itself is the hour indicator. It won the GPHG “Challenge” prize in 2021, the first Chinese watch ever to win a GPHG award (later inducted into Geneva’s art museum). The brand has also taken Red Dot and iF Gold honours (the Michael Young “MY” series), across the Blue Planet, the Magician “transformer,” and Series X.

(Honest notes: the GPHG win was in the entry-level “Challenge” category (sub-CHF 2,000) — a genuine first for China, but not the top prize. Michael Young is a real external collaborator on the “MY” series. Design is in-house under Zhang Jianmin, and there’s no official brand hex, so these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Ciga Design lives in a planet-blue-and-steel palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Ciga Design’s identity is bold, cosmic and industrial — an ink, a planet blue, a steel, a silver, and a chalk. The palette pairs a planet blue with cool steel — the register of a skeletonised, globe-dial watch. It signals engineering and cosmos rather than nostalgia. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a planet blue on cool steel signals cosmic, industrial design. Ciga Design’s world is a globe under a skeleton. For designers, it is a reminder that a cool, cosmic palette reads as bold and forward — right for a globe-dial concept. The takeaways: source the palette from the idea (the blue planet); keep it industrial and skeletal; let one radical concept lead; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a space sans — bold, cosmic, engineered.

Ciga Design’s identity carries a bold, cosmic, engineered spirit — a rotating globe and a skeleton dial. A space sans captures the mood: it is geometric and futuristic, the register of a globe-dial concept. Set in a planet-blue-and-steel palette, the space sans feels bold and cosmic — exactly the personality Ciga Design carries. It is engineered rather than nostalgic, mirroring a skeletonised architecture. (Ciga Design’s real watches are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a space sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: bold, cosmic and engineered.

04

A radical concept as identity

Ciga Design stands for the Earth, turning as the hour.

Ciga Design is a lesson in making a radical concept the identity. A planet-blue-and-steel palette, a space sans and a rotating globe make one bold idea the whole brand — cosmic, engineered, award-winning. The globe is the differentiator. The differentiator is a rotating-planet, skeletonised identity.

For designers and brand-builders, Ciga Design offers a clear takeaway: dare a radical idea and execute it. The lessons: turn a familiar image (the blue planet) into a mechanism; skeletonise to show the engineering; and let awards validate it (GPHG, Red Dot, iF). It is also a reminder to stay accurate: the GPHG win was the Challenge category, Michael Young is an external collaborator, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Ciga Design made a radical concept the brand — proof that a bold idea can be the difference.

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Ciga Design’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Ciga Design, and it does not promote consumption. The Ciga Design name, dials and watches are trademarks/works of their owner and collaborators — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and swatches); no watch or dial is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from public sources (cigadesign.com, Europa Star, Oracle of Time, Time+Tide, GPHG): Ciga Design is an independent Chinese design-led watch brand founded in 2016 by industrial designer Zhang Jianmin in Shenzhen (“China’s first designer watch brand”), with a Bauhaus ethos. Its landmark is the “Blue Planet” — a fully skeletonised watch whose 3D micro-engraved globe (inspired by the 1972 “Blue Marble” photograph) rotates as the hour indicator — which won the GPHG “Challenge” prize in 2021 (the first Chinese watch to win a GPHG award, later inducted into Geneva’s Musée d’Art et d’Histoire); the brand has also won Red Dot and iF Gold honours (the Michael Young “MY” series). Honest notes: the GPHG win was in the entry-level “Challenge” category (sub-CHF 2,000) — a genuine first for China, not the top prize; Michael Young is a real external collaborator on the “MY” series; design is in-house under Zhang Jianmin; and no official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
