A distillery at the end of the road

An organic Highland distillery built from scratch on the Sound of Mull.

Nc’nean is an organic Scotch whisky distillery at Drimnin, on the Morvern peninsula of the western Scottish Highlands, looking across the Sound of Mull towards the Isle of Mull, English Wikipedia says. It was founded by Annabel Thomas, who is still its chief executive; The Spirits Business reported in 2020 that the business was founded in 2013 by Thomas and Derek Lewis. Companies House shows the company was incorporated in March 2013 as Drimnin Distillery Limited and has carried its present company name since 2019.

The company tells the founding story in its own words: Thomas left her job in London in 2013 and spent four years raising money and building the distillery from the ground up, and distilling began in 2017. Funding came in stages. EU-Startups reported in March 2020 that the distillery had closed a round combining a Seedrs crowdfunding campaign with private investors, and named the Scottish Investment Bank, the investment arm of Scottish Enterprise, as one of its key backers. English Wikipedia adds that early money came from family, friends, loans and seed investors, together with a grant from the European Union via the Scottish Government.

The first product was not whisky. English Wikipedia says the Botanical Spirit, which the company describes as a malted barley spirit triple distilled with local Scottish botanicals, was first released in September 2018. The first whisky followed in 2020. The Spirits Business reported in August 2020 that the inaugural release, Ainnir, was an unpeated single malt without an age statement, limited to 1,320 bottles, and that bottle number one was auctioned through Whisky Auctioneer, with the proceeds going to charities including Trees for Life and the Morvern Community Trust.

A goddess, organic barley and a bottle of recycled glass.

The name is the most unusual thing about the brand. The company says it was inspired by Neachneohain, an ancient Gaelic goddess known as the “Queen of Spirits,” whom it describes as a huntress and a fierce protector of nature, and it says it tries to follow her ethos. The brand writes the shortened name with an apostrophe, Nc’nean.

The whisky is defined by what goes into it. The company says it uses only organic, unpeated Scottish barley, ferments for longer than is typical in Scotch, uses two yeast strains for its house style and matures its core whiskies mainly in ex-bourbon, STR red wine and ex-oloroso sherry casks. The Spirits Business reported in 2021 that the distillery is certified organic.

The bottle carries the sustainability message. The Spirits Business reported in July 2021 that Nc’nean bottles its whisky in 100% recycled “extra-flint” clear glass, and the company describes its recycled glass bottle as a first in Scotch whisky, adding the words “we think.” A second bottle came with the Huntress series. Berlin Packaging reported in August 2022 that Huntress used a bottle of 100% post-consumer recycled blue glass, decorated not with a paper label but with a hand-painted botanical illustration printed digitally onto the glass, closed with a Portuguese cork under a wooden head bearing the brand’s logo, and sold in a tube made largely of recycled fibre. English Wikipedia says the distillery introduced a bottle return scheme for UK customers in 2024.

The ranges are named with care. English Wikipedia says the limited Quiet Rebels series, which began in November 2021, names each release after a person at the distillery, starting with the founder, while the yearly Huntress release began in April 2022.

The seven brands in this group are all new-wave whisky distilleries: Sullivans Cove, Penderyn, Mackmyra, Stauning, Cotswolds Distillery, Nc’nean and Kilchoman. New-wave whisky distilleries in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family businesses that still carry a founder’s name to companies that have taken in outside investors or changed hands, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a distillery shop to a specialist retailer abroad.

A whisky distillery’s identity is usually carried less by a single bottle than by a label, a name and the place it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its whisky is actually distilled, matured and bottled.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its whisky is made and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Nc’nean

An independent distillery with a B Corp certificate.

Sustainability has been the brand’s main public story since the first release. The Spirits Business reported in July 2021 that the distillery’s 2020 carbon footprint had been verified as net zero by the consultancy Environmental Strategies, and described Nc’nean as the first whisky distillery in the UK to reach that point; the company says the verification covers scopes 1 and 2. The company says it became a certified B Corp in January 2022 and passed its recertification in July 2025.

Ownership has stayed independent, and the company calls itself “an independent, organic whisky distillery.” Companies House, as of October 2026, records Nc’nean Distillery Limited as an active company with no person or company holding a registrable controlling stake. The Spirits Business reported in May 2026 that Nc’nean had secured further investment in February 2026 and that Mangrove Global would distribute its whisky in the United Kingdom, quoting Annabel Thomas as founder and chief executive.

The spelling needs care online. The brand writes its name with an apostrophe, the company’s own site is ncnean.com, and the company’s former name, Drimnin Distillery, appears in older records. Drimnin is the place where the distillery stands, not a separate brand.

For a design guide, Nc’nean shows how a young distillery can make its packaging part of its argument: a short name drawn from a Gaelic goddess, organic barley, recycled clear glass and botanical illustration. Compare Kilchoman, the independent farm distillery on Islay, and Bruichladdich, the Islay distillery known for its aqua bottle. For this guide we use botanical green, Sound blue and clear glass with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
