Quality Courts
Florida motel owners agree on a standard.
Quality Inn began as an agreement between owners rather than a company. In 1939, Hotel Business recounted in January 2019, a group of independent motel owners in Florida came together to discuss how they could better serve their guests. They shared practices, agreed on a set of quality standards and began referring business to one another. USA Today, in a July 2018 history of Choice Hotels, described the same beginning as a marketing cooperative formed by Florida motor court owners, who referred travellers along the road to each other’s properties.
The arrangement was formalised in 1941, when, according to Hotel Business, the group created Quality Courts United Inc. Tim Shuy, a Choice Hotels vice-president, told the magazine that the members, still a relatively small group, became stricter about day-to-day standards. Through the 1940s and 1950s the association operated legally as a nonprofit. Hotel Business says it introduced a set of standards at its properties in the 1950s that included wall-to-wall carpeting, a daily change of linen, 24-hour desk service and in-room telephones, and a photograph in the same article shows the booklets Quality Courts United printed to list the locations of its member courts.
The legal form changed in 1963. Both Hotel Business and USA Today report that Quality Courts reorganised that year as a for-profit corporation and renamed itself Quality Courts Motels Inc.; Hotel Business adds that it then issued stock to the association’s members and employees. In the late 1960s, the magazine says, the business moved its headquarters from Daytona Beach, Florida, to Silver Spring, Maryland. English Wikipedia, citing the International Directory of Company Histories, says the move followed the purchase of Quality Courts Motels in 1968 by Park Consolidated Motels, the company of the Maryland hotelier Stewart Bainum, who had become a franchisee earlier in the decade and then led the renamed company as president and chief executive.
Growth abroad followed. Hotel Business records that in 1970 Quality Courts opened a European division headquartered in Brussels, set up Quality Motels of Canada and began offering guests 24-hour toll-free central reservations. In 1972 the company changed its name again, to Quality Inns International, the form used by USA Today, to reflect that growth, and Hotel Business says it opened the Quality Motel in Ratingen, West Germany.

One brand becomes a family, then a company name.
The 1980s turned a single chain into a portfolio. Hotel Business says Quality Inns International merged with the healthcare company Manor Care Inc. in 1980 and became its wholly owned subsidiary. In 1981 the lodging system was divided into three distinct chains: Quality Royale for luxury, Quality Inn for the midscale and Comfort Inn as a budget brand. Shuy told the magazine the split was driven partly by consumers wanting different product points and partly by the need to grow in markets without stacking hotels of the same name on top of each other. USA Today described the same three tiers in 2018.
Technology and new names came next. Hotel Business reports that Quality Inn introduced a central reservation system called Sunburst in 1983. In 1986 the company bought the rights to the Clarion Hotels name, rolled its Quality Royale properties into Clarion, and launched two further brands, Sleep Inn and Comfort Suites. In 1990, the magazine says, the company changed its name one last time, to Choice Hotels International, to reflect its international intentions and the range of brands it now sold; USA Today likewise says the company became Choice Hotels International after creating further brands.
Quality Inn remained a brand within the renamed company. Hotel Business notes landmarks in its later United States growth, including a Quality Inn & Suites Conference Center in Mattoon, Illinois, in 2010 and a property in Williston, North Dakota, in 2017, each marking a round-number milestone for the brand. Anne Smith, then Choice’s vice-president of brand management, design and compliance, told the magazine in 2019 that Quality had been consistent and was in consistent demand. English Wikipedia describes Quality Inn today as a franchised chain owned by Choice Hotels, which is based in North Bethesda, Maryland, with hotels in many countries.
Shuy also gave Hotel Business a sense of the early map. Quality Courts, he said, had been concentrated east of the Mississippi in its early decades, while Best Western and others were mostly in the West. By the time the company took the Choice name, the word Quality had spread from a Florida courts association to hotels in Europe and Canada.
Typography
Design and documentation.
Hotel groups tend to organise their names in layers. At the top sits a master brand, the name of the company itself, which appears on investor reports, loyalty programmes and corporate websites. Beneath it sit the hotel brands that guests actually see on the road: names written on tall roadside signs, above front doors, on key cards and on the towels in the bathroom. A single group may run names aimed at very different trips, from a quick overnight stop off a highway to a long city stay.
The link between the two layers is often carried by an endorsement, a short line such as “by” followed by the group’s name, set in smaller type under the hotel brand on a sign or a website. Some groups add the endorsement to every hotel name, some use it for only part of the portfolio, and some leave the hotel brand to stand alone. Hotels in such a group are often run by franchisees, so the brand standards set by the group — the sign, the colours, the lobby details — are what holds the look together.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself, and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Quality Inn
A word that outlived courts, motels and a company name.
A constant in the Quality Inn identity is the word Quality itself. It came from an association whose purpose, as Hotel Business describes it, was to agree on standards and refer guests to members who met them. Every later company name kept it: Quality Courts United in 1941, Quality Courts Motels in 1963 and Quality Inns International in 1972. The second word changed from courts to motels to inns.
In 1981 the word was split across tiers. Quality Royale, Quality Inn and Comfort Inn became three chains, and in 1986, Hotel Business records, Quality Royale properties moved under the Clarion name while Sleep Inn and Comfort Suites were added. In 1990 the parent company took the name Choice Hotels International, and Quality Inn continued as one of its brands.
The printed matter of the early years was a directory. Hotel Business illustrates its 2019 retrospective with the booklets Quality Courts United produced to list the locations of its properties. The same article records how the company’s reservations moved on: a 24-hour toll-free central reservations service in 1970 and the Sunburst central reservation system in 1983.
Ownership has passed through several hands. Hotel Business lists the member-owned association of the 1940s and 1950s, the for-profit corporation of 1963 and the 1980 merger with Manor Care, and English Wikipedia adds the 1968 purchase by Stewart Bainum’s Park Consolidated Motels. Since 1990 the brand has sat within the company that carries the Choice name.
For a design guide, Quality Inn shows how one plain word can carry a brand through changes of legal form, ownership and building type, from a Florida courts association to a franchise brand of an international hotel company. Compare it with Comfort Inn, the budget brand split from it in 1981, and Marriott, another American hotel company with a family of brands. For this guide we use courts blue, directory gold and postcard cream with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
