Bennington Brand Guidelines
A flat deck on aluminium tubes, a ladder of letter codes and an Elkhart workshop that sells the idea of luxury.

Elkhart, 1997
A pontoon maker in RV country.
Bennington is a maker of pontoon boats based in Elkhart, Indiana. The company dates its start to 1997. Its website in 2019 said Bennington was founded that year “by a small group of industry veterans”, and described its focus from the beginning as innovation, design, attention to detail and customer satisfaction. That is the company’s own account, and it does not name the founders on that page.
Bennington was online early. An archived copy of its website from May 2000 opens with the line “We Build The Boats Dreams Are Made Of”, a slogan the page repeats at its close, and it speaks of the company’s dream of building pontoon boats with careful attention to detail and construction.
Elkhart remains the base. In March 2021 Boating magazine and the South Bend television station WNDU reported that Bennington was expanding its operations in Elkhart County, adding a second building about half a mile from its headquarters off County Road 6. WNDU said the company already had a plant off Decio Drive. Boating quoted Jake Vogel, then president of Bennington, saying demand for the company’s pontoons was very strong and that it was investing in its hometown to build more boats for dealers and customers. Lakeland Boating carried the same announcement that month, with the company describing itself as having drawn skilled workers from the community for nearly twenty-five years.

Luxury on two tubes, named in letters.
A pontoon boat is a flat deck carried on two or three aluminium tubes, and on the water many of them look much the same. Bennington’s identity is built on lifting that format into the language of luxury. Its 2019 website called the company a “luxury pontoon boat manufacturer” and used the line “There are pontoons and then there is Bennington.” It grouped the reasons under three plain headings — attention to detail, innovation and design, and customer satisfaction — and said that every curve and design element was chosen to improve the boating experience. These are the company’s claims about itself.
The model names are letters rather than words. In 2019 the range ran through a ladder of series: the Q at the top, then the R, the G, the SX and S, and the SV, which the site presented as a fishing and family boat in a narrow, trailerable width. Each letter came with a span of lengths in feet, and individual boats are named by length plus letters, so that a buyer reads a Bennington as a number and a short code.
That alphabet does a lot of the brand work. The higher the letter in the ladder, the more the website leaned on words such as sport, luxury and performance; the lower ones were framed around comfort, families and choice. The same site invited owners into Club Bennington, offered branded Bennington Gear, and gave the warranty a heading of its own. All of these sat in the main navigation of the site.
The website itself also records where the brand now sits. Its footer in 2019 named Bennington as a registered trademark of Pontoon Boats, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Polaris Industries Inc., and gave a Polaris address in Medina, Minnesota for the marketing sign-up.

Bennington
From Boat Holdings to Polaris.
Before Polaris, Bennington was a brand of Boat Holdings LLC, a privately held company in Elkhart. MPR News reported on 30 May 2018 that Minnesota-based Polaris Industries had agreed to buy Boat Holdings, whose brands included Bennington, Godfrey, Hurricane and Rinker, and that the deal was expected to close within a few months. The same report said Boat Holdings would keep its headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Indiana. Northwest Indiana Business Magazine covered the same purchase. English Wikipedia’s article on Polaris dates the purchase to May 2018 and presents it as the company’s return to building boats.
Polaris then added to the group. English Wikipedia says it bought the Marquis-Larson Boat Group of Pulaski, Wisconsin, in January 2019 and moved that production to Syracuse, Indiana. By March 2021, WNDU described Jake Vogel as president of Polaris Boats, which it called Bennington’s parent company, and reported that the boat business had returned to and passed its pre-pandemic production levels, in Vogel’s words. Bennington’s place inside Polaris is therefore as one brand within a wider boat division.
Through those changes the brand has kept its Elkhart address and its letter-coded model families, and the Polaris link sits quietly in the legal line and the sign-up forms rather than on the boats’ names. The trade name on the deck remains Bennington, as it was on the May 2000 website.
For a design guide, Bennington shows how a maker of a plain, practical boat type can build a premium identity out of words, letter codes and owner clubs, with the Elkhart workshop and a larger corporate owner kept in the background. Compare Tracker, another American builder of aluminium family and fishing boats, and Mercury Marine, a maker of the outboard engines that power many of them. For this guide we use lake slate, champagne and Elkhart blue with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
