Technical toys

Model trains on a veranda in Esslingen.

EHEIM began in 1949 as a workshop for the “repair and manufacture of technical toys,” founded by the engineer Gunther Eheim in Esslingen am Neckar, near Stuttgart. The trade magazine PET worldwide, marking the company’s 75th anniversary in May 2024, wrote that the first premises were a veranda belonging to his father-in-law, where model trains were repaired. German Wikipedia dates the founding to 13 March 1949.

The toys came first. PET worldwide dates a model trolleybus to 1953, and German Wikipedia lists other accessories for H0-scale model railways, among them a television tower with a working lift, a cable car and a chairlift, along with a tethered toy aeroplane. German Wikipedia also lists a Volkswagen T1 rail draisine for model layouts. In 1956, the company’s own timeline says, EHEIM moved from Esslingen to Deizisau, a few kilometres up the Neckar, where it has stayed.

The move into aquariums grew out of the toys. In 1962, the company says, it developed a centrifugal pump with a magnetic coupling, meant at first to drive a fountain for model railway layouts; joined to a cleaning container, the pump became the idea for an aquarium suction filter. An EHEIM filter system went into series production in 1963, according to both the company and PET worldwide. German Wikipedia says the model-making business, including the trolleybus, went to the toy maker Brawa that same year, and the company says it closed its technical-toys branch in 1970.

Gunther Eheim also had a life in aviation. Practical Fishkeeping reported that he founded the airline Contact Air in 1974, and the company’s timeline records its purchase of Stuttgarter Flugdienst in 1985.

Filters, heaters and a single name.

Filters remain the core of the brand. The company’s timeline traces a sequence of canister ranges: a filter generation with synchronous motors in 1981, the professionel series in 1994, the ecco in 1999, the electronic professionel 3e in 2006 and the professionel 4+ in 2015. Garden-pond products appear in the same timeline, with a pond line in 1974 and another in 1985; German Wikipedia dates outdoor filters for garden ponds to 1986.

EHEIM grew by buying other German aquarium makers. In 1993 it bought Müller & Pfleger (mp), the glass-aquarium and cabinet maker of Rockenhausen in the Palatinate, and in 2002 the heater maker JÄGER of Wüstenrot, according to the company and PET worldwide. In 2004 the three names were brought together as the EHEIM Aquatics Group, which the company described as uniting EHEIM, mp and JÄGER.

The separate names did not last. In 2012, the company says, mp and JÄGER were scaled back and placed under the EHEIM brand, and from then on all products and services were managed under the EHEIM name alone; mp’s shop-fitting arm became EHEIM shopDesign, which designs fittings for pet shops and was given its own website and catalogue in 2016. In 2002, the year of the JÄGER purchase, the company also opened a new logistics centre in Deizisau.

Aquariums arrived under the main brand too. The company’s timeline lists the aquastyle nano aquarium and the vivaline all-in-one aquarium in 2010 and the incpiria range in 2012, with incpiria marine sets for saltwater following in 2013. At Interzoo in Nuremberg in 2018 it showed an incpiria with atmospheric LED lighting, the streamcontrol flow simulator, the thermocontrol+ heater and the skim marine protein skimmer, its timeline says. LED lighting followed from 2014, the year the timeline also lists the proxima range.

The aquarium trade and its makers.

The seven brands in this group are all aquarium and pond names: Fluval, Juwel, Seachem, Hikari, OASE, EHEIM and API. Aquarium and pond brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family firms that still carry a founder’s name to labels that now belong to much larger pet care groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a specialist aquatics shop to a general pet store.

An aquarium brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single product than by a name, a logo and the look of its packs, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its tanks, filters, foods or treatments are actually made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its products are made and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

EHEIM

A family company in Deizisau.

EHEIM has stayed in Deizisau since 1956. The company describes itself as a “medium-sized family company” headquartered in Deizisau near Stuttgart, with subsidiaries in aquatics and in industrial interior fittings; German Wikipedia, which lists the group under Eheim Verwaltungs GmbH, names further members including the partition-wall maker intek, which the company says it bought in 2014.

Gunther Eheim died in February 2013; the company’s timeline records it, and PET worldwide noted it again in its anniversary article of 2024. PET worldwide wrote in 2024 that Ibrahim Mefire Kouotou took over the management in 2016, and quoted him calling the 75-year history “proof of our continuous innovation and our commitment to the highest quality.”

On manufacturing, the company says two things. Its history page calls EHEIM “a byword for top quality — made in Germany,” and lists “Made in Germany” among its quality claims. The same timeline records that production began at EMC in China in 2006, and Practical Fishkeeping reported, at the time of the founder’s death, that Eheim had moved some factory work to China to stay competitive. German Wikipedia places the main production site in Deizisau, with further sites at Rockenhausen and Wüstenrot.

For a design guide, EHEIM shows how an engineering brand can absorb the companies it buys — mp and JÄGER — and present everything under one name. Compare OASE, the Hörstel pond and fountain maker that took the opposite course with biOrb, and Fluval, another filter-led aquarium brand. For this guide we use navy, a clear aquarium blue and canister grey with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
