A canned-coffee company turns to malt

From root beer and Mr. Brown to Taiwan’s first single malt.

Kavalan is a single malt whisky made at a distillery in Yuanshan, in Yilan County on the north-east coast of Taiwan, and owned by the Taiwanese King Car Group. English Wikipedia says the distillery takes its name from Kavalan, the old name of Yilan.

The owner came to whisky late. English Wikipedia, citing a 2017 Forbes Asia profile, says King Car was founded in 1979 by Lee Tien-tsai and at first sold root beer; in 1982 it moved into canned coffee with the Mr. Brown brand, which by the mid-1990s led its home market and was growing abroad. The same profile says King Car first tried to enter the alcohol business in 1995, when its plans were turned down by a government that still held a monopoly on alcohol production.

That changed in 2002, when Taiwan opened its alcohol market. The Taipei Times reported in 2016 that King Car then began work on its first distillery, and English Wikipedia, citing published accounts from 2012 and 2014, says the Kavalan distillery was completed in December 2005. Its first spirit ran from the stills on 11 March 2006, and on 4 December 2008 the company released its first bottling, Kavalan Classic, opening the distillery to visitors on the same day.

Recognition came quickly. At a Burns Night blind tasting in Leith, Scotland, in January 2010, a Kavalan whisky was preferred over three Scotch whiskies and an English one, The Times reported that month and The New York Times recounted later that year. Whisky Magazine named the distillery its whisky visitor attraction of the year in 2011, English Wikipedia says, and in 2018 Lee Tien-tsai and the group’s chairman, Yu-Ting Lee, were inducted into the World Whiskies Awards Hall of Fame. In 2017 Forbes Asia profiled the founder’s son Albert Lee as he led the family group’s premium whisky bid.

Climate is the first part of the Kavalan story. Yilan is subtropical, and English Wikipedia notes that the warehouses are not climate-controlled, a factor it links to the tropical-fruit profile of the whisky. The company says its water comes from the headwaters of Snow Mountain, The Spirits Business reported in March 2025, and the distillery buys in malted barley rather than malting its own.

Casks are the second. Kavalan fills ex-bourbon, ex-sherry, port and wine casks, and has become known for S.T.R. casks, wine barrels that are shaved, toasted and re-charred before filling, a process Whisky Magazine described in October 2025. The range is built around the Solist series, single-cask whiskies bottled at cask strength, which the company lists across more than a dozen cask types from fino and amontillado sherry to port and Vinho Barrique. In March 2025 The Spirits Business reported the release of the distillery’s first age-statement whisky, a Kavalan 15 Years Old.

The awards are the third. Time reported in March 2015 that Solist Vinho Barrique had been named World’s Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards, and a Solist Amontillado took the awards’ single-cask title in 2016. The International Wine & Spirit Competition named Kavalan its Distiller of the Year in 2017.

Packaging has evolved with the range. In 2022 the distillery repackaged King Car Conductor, a whisky named after the parent group and first released about 11 years earlier: Drinks Intel reported in July 2022 that the new label sets the name in gold in a semi-cursive Chinese calligraphic script, with flowing lines that refer to the Snow Mountain water source.

The seven brands in this group are all cider and spirits names: Westons, Aspall, Angry Orchard, Moutai, Wuliangye, Kavalan and Amrut. Cider and spirits brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family houses that still carry a founder’s name to labels that now belong to much larger drinks groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a corner shop to a bar list.

A cider or spirits brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single bottle than by a label, a name and the place it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its cider or spirit is actually made and bottled.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its cider or spirit is made and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Kavalan

A distillery that grew into a family of spirits.

The distillery has kept expanding. English Wikipedia says a second production facility opened on the site in 2016, bringing its pot stills to ten sets, and that a third warehouse was completed in 2024, when The Spirits Business reported the opening of a warehouse tasting room. King Car has also widened its drinks range: Forbes reported in September 2018 on Kavalan Gin, made with Taiwanese botanicals such as kumquat, red guava and star fruit, and Kyodo News reported in 2018 that the group had launched Buckskin beer to compete with Taiwan Beer. A Kavalan whisky bar opened in Taipei in 2019, Tatler Asia reported.

Medals keep arriving. The International Whisky Competition named Kavalan its Distillery of the Year in 2023, according to the competition’s results, and again in 2025, when the distillery’s head of research and development, Zerose Yang, was named master distiller of the year, Taiwan News reported, and the World Whiskies Awards named Kavalan Distiller of the Year in 2026.

The name needs a little care. Kavalan is also the name of an Austronesian people of north-east Taiwan, and of the historical region around Yilan; the whisky’s official site is kavalanwhisky.com.

For a design guide, Kavalan shows how a young distillery can build a premium identity from place and process: a historical name for its county, a mountain water source and a cask-by-cask series, with Chinese calligraphy as a second voice beside the Latin wordmark. Compare Amrut, the single malt from Bengaluru, India, and Suntory, the Osaka group behind Yamazaki. For this guide we use Snow Mountain blue, cask amber and night ink with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
