The Korean maker that put the mattress in a box.

From outdoors to indoors
A 1979 company that changed what it made.
Zinus is a Korean company. Korean Wikipedia gives its founding date as 8 March 1979 and its founder as Lee Youn-jae (이윤재), and lists an earlier company name, Jinwoong (진웅). The Korea JoongAng Daily described it in March 2022 as a mattress maker based in Seongnam, in Gyeonggi Province south of Seoul; Korean Wikipedia places its head office in the Bundang district of that city.
It did not begin with beds. The Malaysian site SAYS, writing about the brand in July 2022, said its history “began in 1979, focusing on comfort-oriented outdoor products,” and that Zinus “shifted its sights to indoor products in 2003.” The company’s own website now puts the story more briefly: it calls Zinus “one of the first mattress-in-a-box brands” and says it got its start “more than 40 years ago.”
The company has been on and off the Korean stock market. Korean Wikipedia lists a first listing from 1989 to 2005 and a return to the Korea Exchange on 30 October 2019, citing reports of a relisting after fourteen years. When the company changed hands in 2022, the Korea JoongAng Daily still described Lee as its chief executive.

The “Amazon mattress” and a factory in Georgia.
The United States became Zinus’s main market. The Korean daily Dailian reported in March 2022 that the company entered the US in 2006 and then expanded to Canada, Australia, Japan and Europe, including the UK, Germany and Spain. The same report credited Zinus with commercialising the method of compressing a mattress and shipping it in a box, the format now known as bed-in-a-box, and said it supplied mattresses to Walmart stores in the US and Canada. The Korea JoongAng Daily noted that the company was known in Korea as “the Amazon mattress” because of its US sales through Amazon.
The range goes beyond mattresses. When the State of Georgia announced the company’s American plant in August 2020, it described Zinus as specialising in “mattresses, bed foundations, platform beds, sofas, and loveseats, all shipped directly to customers’ doors,” and said it “infuses natural ingredients including green tea, olive oil, and charcoal” into its mattresses and furniture.
Manufacturing is spread across several countries. The same Georgia announcement, dated 18 August 2020, said Zinus USA, a subsidiary of the Korean company, would develop its first North American manufacturing facility in McDonough, Henry County, and that the company’s other factories were in Indonesia and China. The release noted that Zinus already had several distribution centres across the US, so McDonough was its first American factory rather than its first American site; Keith Reynolds, then president of Zinus in the US, was quoted calling the plant a critical step in the company’s evolution as a global business. By August 2022 the Korean business paper Asia Economy was reporting that products made at the Georgia plant were selling well, and the Korea JoongAng Daily reported that Zinus planned to use new investment to build another plant in Indonesia.
The company’s current website says it produces “everything in our own cutting-edge facilities worldwide, including the USA” — a claim we give as the company’s own. In 2022 Dailian reported that Zinus planned to widen its range into furniture for living rooms, home offices and outdoor spaces.

The seven brands in this group all make or sell mattresses: King Koil, Sleepmaker, Birch, Nolah, Zinus, Amerisleep and PlushBeds. Mattress brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from names licensed to independent factories in many countries to companies that sell online and ship a mattress compressed in a box, and a single name can belong to a much larger bedding or furniture group.
A mattress brand’s identity is usually carried less by the product itself, which looks much like its rivals once it is on a bed, than by a name, a label, a box and the advertising around it, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, licensed its mark or moved its production. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its mattresses are actually made.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its mattresses are made and what materials it names — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Zinus
A founder’s company joins a department-store group.
In March 2022 Zinus changed hands. On 22 March the board of Hyundai Department Store approved buying a 30 percent stake from Lee Youn-jae and five related holders, together with newly issued shares, Dailian and the Korea JoongAng Daily reported; the combined holding of 35.82 percent made the department-store company Zinus’s largest shareholder. Dailian reported that Lee would keep part of his stake and stay on as chairman of the board, and that the group had pledged to keep all of Zinus’s employees and its existing executives. The Korea JoongAng Daily quoted Nam Sung-hyun, an analyst at Hanwha Investment & Securities, as saying that Hyundai was “going beyond retail and preparing to go into manufacturing.”
The handover followed in May. The Korean business site CEO Score Daily reported on 16 May 2022 that Hyundai Department Store would pay the sellers that month and that an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting on 25 May would appoint four of its nominees as directors of Zinus. Korean Wikipedia now lists Hyundai Department Store as the parent company and names Jeong Baek-jae as chief executive, and the Zinus website describes the brand as a member of the Hyundai Department Store Group. Hyundai Department Store has been Zinus’s largest shareholder since 2022.
The brand’s public face is Zinus, Inc., which signs the zinus.com website; the Korean listed company and the American operating subsidiary sit behind it.
For a design guide, Zinus shows how a brand can be shaped by its packaging and its sales channel — a mattress that arrives rolled in a carton, and products named after the ingredients in their foam. Compare Amerisleep, an Arizona brand that sells foam mattresses online and in its own showrooms, and Nolah. For this guide we use deep tea green, leaf and carton white with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
