A bear for a brand

A French plush name that became one of three Juratoys brands.

Kaloo tells its own beginning simply. The brand’s story, as carried on the Kaloo page of the French stockist Les Jouets en Bois, says that Kaloo “came to life one beautiful morning in late 1998,” and that a little bear, which it calls an emotional symbol for toddlers, was chosen as the brand’s emblematic animal. The same text describes Kaloo as a specialist in soft toys and bedding accessories, and presents it as “a French story,” shown with a French flag beside the name. That is the brand speaking about itself.

Kaloo’s later history is better documented, because it is bound up with a group. By 2015 Kaloo belonged to Juratoys, a toy company based in Orgelet, in the French Jura. When the American trade magazine The Toy Book reported on 28 May 2015 that Alex Brands had acquired Juratoys, as its first move into Europe, it described Juratoys as the parent company of two European toy brands, Janod and Kaloo, and said the business had offices in the United Kingdom, the United States, Hong Kong and China. The Toy Book described Kaloo at that point as a high-end brand making plush products and stuffed toys aimed at infants.

Janod, the other half of that pairing, is the group’s wooden-toy brand. Our Janod guide follows that side of the group in more detail.

The pairing gave Juratoys a soft range next to its wooden one, and both brands were sold through the same group from Orgelet. The Toy Book reported that the deal would let Alex Brands use Juratoys’ European distribution centres for its American toys, and let the French company use Alex Brands’ capabilities in the United States to grow there. The same report said Alex Brands had also bought a distributor based in the United Kingdom, due to start trading on 1 June 2015, to serve as a foothold for both Alex Brands and Juratoys in that market.

Three owners in seven years.

Kaloo has changed hands with its group rather than on its own. After the Alex Brands purchase in 2015, The Toy Book reported on 25 July 2018 that Alex Brands had sold Juratoys to Argos Wityu, which it described as an independent private-equity group with offices in Brussels, Frankfurt, Geneva, Luxembourg, Milan and Paris. The magazine said a team from Harris Williams’ consumer group led the transaction. In that report the magazine said Juratoys owned Janod and Kaloo, described as two complementary brands focused on children up to six, and described Kaloo as offering plush products and bedding accessories.

The next owner was French and industrial. Nursery Today, the British trade title, reported on 21 October 2022 that Maped, which it described as a French family group known for colouring and school supplies, had acquired Juratoys. By then the group listed three heritage brands: Janod, Kaloo and Lilliputiens. The magazine named Maped’s chief executive as Romain Lacroix and Juratoys’ as Ludovic Martin, and said the Orgelet site would remain the group’s centre of excellence for games and toys, while Maped’s learning activities stayed in Argonay. Maped has owned Kaloo, through Juratoys, since October 2022.

That makes Kaloo a sibling of Lilliputiens, the third heritage brand in the same group. Within Juratoys, Kaloo’s role is the one the trade press has given it in every report cited here: plush toys and soft bedding for babies, next to Janod’s wooden toys.

Through all three changes of owner, the brand kept its own name and its own subject. The 2015 and 2018 reports describe the same product field, plush toys and bedding for the very young, and the 2022 report lists Kaloo by name among the heritage brands Maped bought, rather than folding it into another label.

Plush toys and design.

The seven brands in this group are all toy names: small foot, Bajo, Moluk, Magna-Tiles, Kaloo, Guidecraft and Lilliputiens. Toy brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family workshops that still carry a founder’s idea to labels that now belong to larger groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a small independent shop to a department store or an online marketplace.

A toy brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single object than by a box, a name, a colour and a way of drawing, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its toys are actually designed and made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its toys are made and how its boxes and logos have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Kaloo

A plush brand inside a toy group.

Kaloo’s identity rests on two things its own story names: the year it began and the bear it chose. The little bear as the emblematic animal is the one visual fact the brand sets down in that text. The palette and type on this page are our own reading of the brand’s soft-toy world rather than its specification.

The ownership record is clearer than the founding one. Juratoys in Orgelet has been Kaloo’s home in every trade report cited here, from The Toy Book in 2015 to Nursery Today in 2022, and the group has moved from an American toy company to a European private-equity group to a French family group known for colouring and school supplies. Each report names Kaloo as one of the group’s brands, and each describes it in the same terms: plush toys and soft goods for babies.

Under Maped, the three Juratoys heritage brands, Janod, Kaloo and Lilliputiens, sit in the same group as Maped’s colouring and school-supply ranges, with Orgelet kept as the centre for games and toys.

For a design guide, Kaloo shows how a soft-toy brand can hold one emblem and one subject through several changes of owner. Compare Janod, its wooden-toy sibling in the Juratoys group, and Lilliputiens, its third sibling in the group. For this guide we use cocoa, cream plush and a powder blue with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
