Hangzhou, 1989

A company called Chunfeng and a trade name built from its initials.

CFMOTO is the trade name of Zhejiang Chunfeng Power Co., Ltd., which English Wikipedia describes as a Chinese manufacturer of engines, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, quadricycles and yachts, headquartered in Hangzhou, in Zhejiang province. Chinese Wikipedia gives the full company name in Chinese, places the head office in Hangzhou’s Yuhang district, and describes the business as a developer and producer of motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. Chinese Wikipedia gives the company’s short name as Chunfeng Power (春风动力), the same name English Wikipedia says appears in its stock-exchange listing.

Both language editions date the company to 1989, and Chinese Wikipedia says it was established in Hangzhou. English Wikipedia names Lai Guoqiang as the founder. From those beginnings the company grew into a maker of engines and whole vehicles, and Chinese Wikipedia says that from 2013 it also became involved in building high-end yachts — a line English Wikipedia records under the same year.

Public institutions are among its customers. English Wikipedia says the company’s CF650-2 and CF1250J models are used as police vehicles by public security agencies in many Chinese provinces and cities. Chinese Wikipedia adds that in 2014 CFMOTO became a designated producer of escort motorcycles for state guests, naming the CF650G model, and lists a further range of official and police vehicles under its own heading. For a consumer brand, that institutional work sits in the background: the same machinery and engines also underpin the recreational motorcycles and off-road vehicles sold under the CFMOTO name.

In August 2017, Chinese Wikipedia says, the company listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange; English Wikipedia notes that it trades there under the name Chunfeng Power.

A partnership with KTM, engines built in Hangzhou and a racing debut in 2022.

The relationship that most shapes CFMOTO’s international profile is with the Austrian motorcycle maker KTM. English Wikipedia says CFMOTO and KTM entered a commercial partnership in 2011, and that in 2017 the two companies started a joint venture allowing the production and sale of KTM motorcycles in China. According to the same article, CFMOTO also assembles small-displacement models on KTM’s behalf in its Chinese factories and produces the larger KTM LC8c engines. English Wikipedia’s KTM article adds that KTM and CFMOTO oversee the global production of the LC8c models, naming the 790 Duke and 790 Adventure, in Hangzhou.

At the end of 2020, English Wikipedia says, CFMOTO announced Zeeho, a sub-brand of electric two-wheelers; the article notes that these are classed as electric bicycles in China even though they have no pedals. Zeeho gives the company a second name for an urban, electric line, leaving CFMOTO itself on the motorcycles, ATVs and side-by-sides.

Racing has given the name a wider audience. English Wikipedia says CFMOTO made its debut in the Moto3 class of Grand Prix motorcycle racing in 2022, with two KTM RC250GP machines rebranded as CFMOTO and entered by the Prüstel GP team for the Spanish riders Xavier Artigas and Carlos Tatay. Chinese Wikipedia records the same 2022 entry into MotoGP’s Moto3 class. From 2024, English Wikipedia says, CFMOTO joined forces with the Aspar Team to contest both Moto2 and Moto3, and the same year it entered the World Rally-Raid Championship with a factory effort in the quad category. In the 2022 season, English Wikipedia says, Tatay started the Indonesian Grand Prix from pole position and finished third.

Design and documentation.

The brands in this group all make powersports machines: motorcycles, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, side-by-sides and personal watercraft. Some grew out of larger industrial groups and only later attached their names to leisure machines; others were set up from the start to build engines and the vehicles around them, and a few now build machines under more than one name.

A powersports brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single badge than by a set of habits: a livery colour repeated across a range, model names and number codes on side panels, decals that change from season to season, and race teams that put the same colours in front of a crowd. Because the company behind a name may have been sold, spun off from a larger group or folded into a new owner, the questions worth asking are plain ones: who started it, who owns it now, and where its vehicles are actually built.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself, and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

CFMOTO

Model codes, FORCE names and one name in capitals.

The brand’s voice is carried less by evocative names than by a system. English Wikipedia lists the motorcycles by a displacement number followed by a family code: NK for standard or naked bikes, SR for sport machines, CL-C and CL-X for cruisers and retro models, MT for dual-sport and adventure bikes, and GT and TR-G for touring. The off-road vehicles follow a parallel pattern built on the word FORCE: CFORCE for quads and ATVs, UFORCE for utility vehicles and ZFORCE for sport side-by-sides. Chinese Wikipedia lists a similar range, along with scooters and the small Papio minibike.

That approach gives a designer a clear rule set: a number for size, two or three capitals for the type, and the brand name written in capitals as CFMOTO, the form English Wikipedia uses for the trade name. The company name, Chunfeng, stays in the background in Chinese and in the stock-exchange listing, while the Latin-letter trade name does the work on vehicles, dealers and race liveries.

Where the vehicles come from is part of the same picture. Both Wikipedia editions place the company in Hangzhou, and English Wikipedia’s KTM article places the shared LC8c production there too. CFMOTO therefore appears on its own vehicles and, through the KTM partnership, stands behind engines and motorcycles that carry another maker’s name. English Wikipedia also notes that CFMOTO keeps a dealer locator on its website for the United States market, where its ATVs and side-by-sides sit beside its motorcycles.

For a design guide, CFMOTO shows how a manufacturer can build a recognisable identity from a short initialism and a disciplined naming system — numbers, type codes and a family suffix — rather than from a heritage story. Compare Kawasaki, a Japanese maker of motorcycles and off-road vehicles, and Can-Am, another maker of ATVs and side-by-sides. For this guide we use Hangzhou teal, trail sand and graphite with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
