A warehouse by Fort St. George

A Scottish trader in Madras, and a brewer who bought him out.

McDowell’s began as a trading house, not a distillery. English Wikipedia’s history of United Spirits, the company that owns the brand today, says McDowell and Company was founded in India in 1826 by Angus McDowell, a Scot, who set up a warehouse near Fort St. George in Madras, now Chennai. It imported liquor, tobacco and other goods for the British in India. The same history says the firm was incorporated as McDowell & Company Limited in 1898, and Diageo India today shows “1826” as the year the brand was established on its McDowell’s page.

The modern business began with a sale. In 1951 the trading company was bought by the United Breweries Group of Vittal Mallya, English Wikipedia says. In 1959 Mallya set up McDowell’s first distillery at Cherthala in Kerala, on the banks of Vembanad lake, where the company bottled imported brandies from concentrate. A plant to make extra-neutral alcohol followed at Cherthala in 1961, which English Wikipedia describes as the first of its kind in India, and the company launched its first brand of its own, Golden Grape Brandy, in 1962.

The name that would carry the business came soon after. When a bottling contract with Herbertsons expired, the company launched McDowell’s No.1 Brandy in 1963–64, English Wikipedia says, and that brandy set the template for the No.1 brands that followed. McDowell’s No.1 Whisky came in 1968, the year Diageo India still treats as the brand’s launch, and new distilleries were opened in Hyderabad, at Ponda in Goa and at Hathidah in Bihar. Vijay Mallya, Vittal’s son, joined the board in 1973 and became chairman of UB Group and McDowell’s in 1983. In 1987 McDowell’s moved its headquarters from Madras to Bangalore, now Bengaluru.

The idea at the heart of the brand is a single label, No.1, stretched across categories. English Wikipedia calls McDowell’s No.1 an umbrella brand of whisky, brandy and rum, the rum sold as McDowell’s No.1 Celebration. The rum arrived in 1990–91, in dark Celebration and white Caribbean versions. The name also appears on soda and bottled water, and Diageo India’s brand page features videos for House of McDowell’s Soda alongside the whisky.

The pack has been redrawn several times. English Wikipedia, citing The Hindu Business Line in September 2000, says the London design consultancy Claessens International was hired that year to revamp the design and packaging of the No.1 series. In September 2020 Diageo India announced what MediaInfoline reported as the biggest change for the brand since its 1968 launch: a new logo unit built around an “open embrace,” meant to suggest the hug when three or more friends meet, a slightly taller bottle, and two whiskies, No1 Original and No1 Luxury. The report said Design Bridge led the redesign, quoted Amarpreet Anand of Diageo India on the brand’s “continuous journey since 1968,” and noted that the #TheNewNo1 campaign featured women in all its communications for the first time.

The latest change came in autumn 2026. Global Drinks Intel reported on 29 September 2026 that Diageo India had given McDowell’s No1 a new bottle shape and a new label for both Original and Luxury, which the company called a contemporary visual identity for “a more premium, distinctive and aspirational presence to shelf,” and had raised the share of Scotch in the blend. Diageo India’s brand page describes the brand through “Yaari” and friendship, and English Wikipedia gives its slogan as “No1 Yaari Ka No1 Spirit.”

Outside India the name has had to adapt. Scotchwhisky.com reported in April 2016 that Diageo had agreed with the Scotch Whisky Association to change the labelling of McDowell’s in markets outside India, through a transition that would “remove Scottish references.”

The seven brands in this group are all Indian and Japanese spirits names: Old Monk, McDowell’s, Royal Stag, Officer’s Choice, Blenders Pride, Hibiki and Nikka. Spirits brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from houses that still carry a founder’s name to labels that now belong to much larger drinks groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a corner shop to a hotel bar.

A spirits brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single bottle than by a label, a name and the story it tells, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its whisky or rum is actually distilled, blended and bottled.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its spirits are made and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

McDowell’s

From McDowell and Company to United Spirits and Diageo.

The company changed shape around the brand. English Wikipedia says McDowell’s formed India’s first joint venture in alcoholic drinks with the British group United Distillers in 1991–92, was reincorporated as McDowell Spirits in 1999, took the name McDowell & Company again on 1 April 2000 and, after merging with Herbertsons, Shaw Wallace’s distilling business and other companies, became United Spirits Limited on 17 October 2006, with headquarters at UB Tower in Bengaluru.

Control then passed to Diageo. English Wikipedia says the British drinks group bought its first stake in United Spirits in May 2013 and had become the largest shareholder by July 2013. After an open offer in June 2014, Drinks International reported on 2 July 2014 that Diageo held 54.78 per cent of the company, giving it majority control; United Spirits now trades as part of Diageo India. The rum in particular reshaped its market: Mint on Sunday reported in April 2016 that McDowell’s No.1 Celebration had overtaken Old Monk, long India’s biggest spirits brand, by 2005.

The old company name is also being used again. In April 2024 Diageo India announced McDowell’s & Co. Distiller’s Batch, an Indian single malt linked to its Nashik distillery, and presented McDowell’s & Co. as the house behind the brand. Diageo India’s brand page says McDowell’s No.1 is sold in 20 countries.

The name needs some care online. McDowell is also a family name shared by many unrelated businesses, and the brand’s pages sit on Diageo India’s site, diageoindia.com.

For a design guide, McDowell’s shows how a trading house’s surname and a single number could be stretched across brandy, whisky, rum and soda, and redrawn by successive owners while keeping the name in front. Compare Old Monk, the Mohan Meakin rum it overtook, and Kingfisher, the lager of United Breweries, the group that bought McDowell’s in 1951. For this guide we use No.1 red, seal gold and bottle black with a bold sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
