Five breweries and a bird

Colonial breweries, a Scottish founder and the Mallya family.

Kingfisher is the flagship of United Breweries Limited, India’s biggest brewer, which is based in Bangalore (Bengaluru). The company traces its brewing back to the colonial era. Its own history, as published on its corporate website in 2010, says that it all began with five breweries in South India, the oldest of them Castle Breweries, dating from 1857, and that on 15 March 1915 a Scotsman, Thomas Leishman, bought the five breweries to form United Breweries Ltd. English Wikipedia lists the others as Nilgiris Breweries, the Bangalore Brewing Co., the British Brewing Corporation and BBB Brewery Co.

The early trade, in the company’s telling, was carried by bullock cart: barrels, or hogsheads, of beer wheeled to customers in and around Madras, Bangalore and the Nilgiris, among them British troops, with whom the beer became a favourite. That 1857 date still anchors the brand. Kingfisher’s British website says today that its roots can be traced back to 1857 and that five leading Indian breweries joined forces to create it.

After independence the company passed to an Indian owner. In 1947, English Wikipedia says, citing India Today, Vittal Mallya, who had been buying United Breweries shares, became its first Indian director, and a year later he replaced R. G. N. Price as chairman; the company’s own history says Mallya bought the business in 1947. He expanded the group into spirits and other industries. His son, Vijay Mallya, became chairman of the UB Group in 1983, at the age of 28, after his father’s death, the business newspaper Mint reported in 2016.

A premium lager, a ban on advertising and a calendar.

Kingfisher as it is sold today is the Kingfisher Premium lager. English Wikipedia, citing a 2016 profile in the Financial Times, says it was launched in 1978 under Vijay Mallya, inspired by an earlier, defunct United Breweries brand; English Wikipedia’s article on the UB Group, without a citation, says the name first made a modest entry in the 1960s. Since then the range has grown into a family of Kingfisher beers, among them Kingfisher Strong, Kingfisher Ultra and Kingfisher Blue, which the company listed alongside Premium on its website in 2010.

Kingfisher’s marketing grew up under a constraint. Alcohol advertising is banned in India, so the UB Group promoted the brand through so-called surrogate advertising, using the Kingfisher name on products such as packaged mineral water, according to English Wikipedia, which cites The Wall Street Journal in 2005 and The Hindu BusinessLine in 2013. In 2003, Mint reported, the UB Group launched the Kingfisher Calendar, featuring fashion models, and in 2005 it launched Kingfisher Airlines; English Wikipedia, citing the Journal, says Kingfisher advertising then made its way into aircraft cabins. The airline stopped flying in 2012 and its licence was suspended, Mint reported in 2016.

The company has long promoted Kingfisher as India’s leading beer abroad. In 2010 it said Kingfisher Premium was available in 52 countries and led Indian beers in the international market. In the United States, English Wikipedia says, citing Steven Chen’s 2018 book The Design Imperative, the company promoted the beer by playing down its ethnic associations.

The seven brands in this group are all beer names from Asia: Tiger, Anchor, Beerlao, Bintang, Cobra, Kingfisher and Taiwan Beer. Asian beer brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from names first brewed by a single local company to names that now belong to much larger brewing groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a street stall to a supermarket shelf.

A beer brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single brew than by a label, a name and the occasion it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its brewing or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its beer is actually brewed and packed.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its beer is brewed and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Kingfisher

From a British brewer to Heineken control.

Ownership of United Breweries shifted gradually towards Europe. The British brewer Scottish & Newcastle held 37.5% of the company, and when Heineken and Carlsberg completed their takeover of Scottish & Newcastle in April 2008, that stake came to Heineken, United Breweries said on its website, adding that Heineken would be active in India solely through United Breweries. By 2021 Heineken held about 45%. In June 2021 it bought a further 14.99% and took its stake to 61.5%, gaining control of the company; Business Standard reported on 23 June 2021 that those shares had earlier belonged to Vijay Mallya and were sold by India’s Debt Recovery Tribunal. Mallya had left India in March 2016 while banks were pursuing loans owed by his companies, The Economic Times reported at the time. Business Standard put United Breweries’ share of the Indian beer market at about 50% in 2021.

In Britain and Europe the brand is handled by Kingfisher Beer Europe, a Kent-based arm of United Breweries that trades as KBE Drinks. English Wikipedia says the beer sold in Britain is brewed under licence by Heineken to the same recipe as in India, and that the company used the tagline “The Real Taste of India”; its British website now uses the line “Look up & see the beauty”. KBE has added drinks beyond Kingfisher: Peacock Cider in November 2016, reported by the trade site FoodBev, and the Indonesian and Cantonese beers Bintang and Pearl River in 2017, English Wikipedia says. In January 2024 the trade paper The Morning Advertiser reported the launch of Kingfisher Zero, an alcohol-free version of what KBE called its biggest brand.

For a design guide, Kingfisher shows how one bird and one name were carried from a brewery’s beer to a calendar and, for a time, an airline. Compare Cobra, the London-founded Indian lager, and Bintang, the Heineken-owned Indonesian lager that KBE also sells. For this guide we use a kingfisher red, a plumage blue and a sun gold with a condensed sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
