Ben Moon’s brand, and the MoonBoard

Moon is the Sheffield bouldering brand of climbing legend Ben Moon — and the standardized MoonBoard.

Moon brings the round its legend — the Sheffield bouldering brand founded by Ben Moon, one of Britain’s great rock climbers, whose MoonBoard turned a training wall into a global standard. Moon makes apparel, pads and the MoonBoard, and its answer to a round about chalk, crashpads and training is a climber’s brand plus a training revolution: a legend’s label, and a standardized board every climber can share. A brand, and a board.

Its identity is Ben Moon’s brand, and the MoonBoard. Moon’s founder, its MoonBoard and its Sheffield roots are the story here. A brand, from a legend. Ben Moon’s brand, and the MoonBoard.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Moon — Moon Climbing, at moonclimbing.com — is a bouldering-focused brand making climbing apparel, crash pads, chalk bags and training products, most famously the MoonBoard, a range of standardized, overhanging LED training walls that let climbers worldwide attempt identical problems. Its founder is Ben Moon, born in 1966, a British rock climber and businessman: his 1984 Statement of Youth and 1990 Hubble are landmarks, with Hubble a consensus 8c+ that some later argued was the first 9a, so we frame it as an early 8c+ rather than state 9a flatly. On the founding year, sources conflict — the brief’s 1996 does not match accounts giving 2002, after an earlier company, so we do not print a hard year and say the early 2000s. On where it is made — a theme of this round — Moon is Sheffield-based and designed, but we do not claim UK-made, since its apparel and pads are likely produced offshore. On ownership, it is commonly described as independent and founder-led, which we hedge for 2026. Its marks — Moon, MoonBoard — are IP we describe but do not reproduce, and there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Moon lives in a lunar indigo. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Moon’s identity is legendary, Sheffield and training-led — a lunar indigo, an ink, a haze, a deep indigo, and a paper. The palette leans lunar indigo and haze: a deep, night-sky register that nods to the Moon name and a training board rather than a loud palette. It signals a legend’s brand. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a lunar indigo signals a legendary, training identity. Moon’s world is a legendary, training object. For designers, it is a reminder that a deep indigo and a soft haze can carry a gear brand — the tone of the Moon name. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: carry a legend’s name; own a training standard; be honest it is Sheffield-designed; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a MoonBoard serif — legendary, considered, made.

Moon’s identity carries a legendary, considered, made spirit — a climber’s brand, not a fashion. A MoonBoard serif captures the mood: storied, deliberate and a little iconic, the register of a brand carrying a legend’s name and a training standard. Set in a lunar-indigo palette, the MoonBoard serif feels legendary and considered — exactly the personality Moon carries. It is a legend rather than a logo, mirroring textile and board. (Moon’s real wordmark, and the MoonBoard, are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a MoonBoard-serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: legendary, considered and made.

Chalk, crashpads & training

Moon stands for Ben Moon’s brand, and the MoonBoard.

Moon brings the round its legend. A lunar-indigo palette, a MoonBoard serif and a training board make one thing — Ben Moon’s brand, and the MoonBoard — the whole identity: legendary, Sheffield and training-led. The founder is the differentiator, and the MoonBoard is the meaning. The point is a bouldering brand founded by one of Britain’s great climbers, whose standardized training board became a global fixture.

Put to work, the identity is a legend plus a training standard told straight, as design. A maker in this spirit would carry a legend’s name, own a training standard, and be honest it is Sheffield-designed. A reader in this spirit would keep the facts right: Ben Moon, born 1966, climbed Statement of Youth in 1984 and Hubble in 1990, a consensus 8c+ later argued as the first 9a; the company’s founding year is disputed and framed as the early 2000s; it is Sheffield-based and designed, not claimed as UK-made; and it is described as founder-led, hedged. Moon sits in the round’s training thread with Tension and Beastmaker — its MoonBoard and Tension’s board are two of the big three standardized LED training boards, with Kilter, while Beastmaker is the analog fingerboard standard. The honest editorial moves are to frame Hubble as an early 8c+, to not print a hard founding year, to say Sheffield-designed not UK-made, and to hedge the ownership. The lesson Moon teaches is that a legend’s name and a training standard can be a brand, and honesty about the year and the making keeps the legend credible.

For designers and brand-builders, Moon continues chalk, crashpads & training: carry the legend — and own a training standard. The lessons: build on a genuine founder legend; create a standard others adopt; do not overstate a grade or a date; say designed-here not made-here; and never reproduce a logo. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Moon is the Sheffield bouldering brand of climbing legend Ben Moon, and the standardized MoonBoard — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Read that way, Moon is less a brand than a legend and a board: Ben Moon’s label, and the MoonBoard climbers everywhere share. The lesson for a brand is that a founder legend and a training standard reinforce each other, and honesty about the disputed year keeps the legend earned. Moon made Ben-Moon’s-brand-and-the-MoonBoard the identity — proof that a legend can be a brand.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Moon’s visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Moon Climbing, and it does not promote the purchase or use of any product. The Moon name and marks (MoonBoard) are trademarks of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and textile/board texture swatches); no apparel, crash pad, board grid or logo is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from reputable references and the maker’s site (moonclimbing.com): Moon (Moon Climbing) is a bouldering-focused brand making climbing apparel, crash pads, chalk bags and training products, most famously the MoonBoard (standardized overhanging LED training walls with a companion app); founder Ben Moon (b.1966), a British rock climber and businessman (Statement of Youth, 1984; Hubble, 1990 — a consensus 8c+ some later argued was the first 9a, framed here as an early 8c+ rather than 9a). Honest notes: the founding year is disputed (accounts give 2002, after an earlier company; the “1996” figure is not asserted), so this article says the early 2000s; Moon is Sheffield-based and designed, not claimed UK-made (apparel/pads likely offshore); it is commonly described as independent/founder-led, hedged for 2026. No official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
