North Star Games Brand Guidelines
The Maryland publisher named for the star that brought a fishing boat home.

Two constants: a midnight navy and star gold palette and a geometric sans register. Abstract homage — not a North Star Games product or mark; no box, card or logo is reproduced.
Cluzzle
A salmon-boat captain and a business-school start-up.
North Star Games was founded in 2003 by Dominic Crapuchettes, who still owns it, the company says. Its own account begins in Alaska: Crapuchettes, it says, grew up there, joined his father’s salmon-fishing boat as crew at thirteen and ran the boat for twelve seasons. The company tells the story of its name the same way. One stormy night, it says, the boat’s engine room flooded and every instrument failed, and Crapuchettes steered home by the North Star; he then promised himself he would follow his dream of making games.
English Wikipedia places the founding in College Park, Maryland, and adds that an MBA classmate, Satish Pillalamarri, joined the company full time after graduating in 2004. Its first game, according to the same article, was Cluzzle, a 2003 family game about sculpting clay. Today the company describes itself as an independent board-game publisher based in Maryland.
The game that made its name was Wits & Wagers, a trivia game in which players bet on one another’s answers, as English Wikipedia describes it. English Wikipedia credits its design to Crapuchettes and Nate Heasley and dates its first edition to 2005, with a second edition in 2007. Editions in German, French, Swedish and Norwegian followed in 2008, and an Xbox 360 version, developed by Hidden Path Entertainment, was released in May 2008.
Say Anything, which English Wikipedia describes as an opinion game meant to get people talking and laughing, followed in 2008.

Evolution, Oceans and the hobby turn.
In 2014 North Star moved firmly into strategy games with Evolution, in which players adapt species to compete for food. English Wikipedia says Crapuchettes developed it with Dmitry Knorre and Sergei Machin, who had published a related Russian game, Evolution: The Origin of Species, through RightGames in 2010; a reviewer quoted in the same article called the 2014 version a different game entirely from its predecessor. A second edition followed in 2015.
The series grew. Evolution: Climate, released in 2016 as both an expansion and a standalone game, and a digital adaptation of Evolution was released in 2019, English Wikipedia says. Oceans, a standalone game set under the sea, followed in 2020.
North Star also published lighter games during these years. English Wikipedia lists Happy Salmon, a fast card game played with physical actions, in 2016; Dirty Pig in 2019; and Paint the Roses, a cooperative puzzle about the Queen of Hearts’ gardens, in 2022. Meeple’s Herald later described the company’s Happy Planet brand as its line for the toy and specialty trade.
Today the company’s shop leads with its Nature line — a base game with modules including Flight, Jurassic, Natural Disasters, Arctic Tundra and Amazon Rainforest — alongside Biomos, Inheritors, Eila and Something Shiny, a deluxe Wits & Wagers, Oceans and Evolution. It also sells digital versions of Nature, Evolution and Oceans.
Typography
Design and documentation.
The seven brands in this group are all board-game publishers: Lookout Games, Gamewright, Thunderworks Games, North Star Games, Devir, Horrible Guild and Bézier Games. Board-game publishers sit at many different points in the hobby, from small studios built around the work of one or two designers to companies that now belong to much larger games groups, and a single title can be sold everywhere from a specialist game shop to a toy aisle.
A publisher’s identity is usually carried less by a single box than by a name, a logo on the box and the games it becomes known for, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved, or licensed its games to other publishers in other countries. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and which games and designers made its reputation.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, its best-known games and any honours from named awarding bodies — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

NorthStar Game Studio
A new logo and a narrower focus.
In 2022 the company changed direction. In a post titled “NorthStar announces a new direction,” reported by the board-game site Meeple’s Herald on 28 July 2022, Crapuchettes wrote that after twenty years of publishing, the company would no longer publish party games for the mass market, kids’ games for toy stores or digital versions of its hobby games; its focus would be hobby games that are “richly thematic, deeply strategic, and relatively easy to teach.” He wrote that North Star had sold the Happy Planet brand to Exploding Kittens and licensed the worldwide rights to Wits & Wagers and Say Anything to Mattel, and that the company had been “much too small to be everything to everyone.”
The same post introduced a new identity. The company says it worked with Quillsilver Studio to create a new logo, then commissioned an illustration based on that logo for Oceans: Legends of the Deep. Since then the company has styled itself NorthStar, as one word, and calls itself NorthStar Game Studio on its website, while its site footer and shop still carry the North Star Games name.
The star itself carries the brand’s story. The company’s about page frames its mission in the same terms as its founding tale — games that guide new and experienced players “into worlds of strategy, story, and shared fun,” like the North Star guiding travellers — and lists Crapuchettes as owner and head designer, who leads the vision for every game. In the 2022 post he signed himself founder and lead designer and wrote that the change would let him spend more time designing.
No brand colours or typefaces are published, and the company does not say on its website where its games are manufactured.
For a design guide, North Star Games shows how a publisher can narrow its range and redraw its mark while keeping a founding story at the centre. Compare Stonemaier Games, another American publisher of nature-themed strategy games, and Gamewright. For this guide we use midnight navy, star gold, ocean teal and salmon with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
