A freezer for insulin

Scrap metal, a basement and a father’s problem.

Sub-Zero began with a problem at home. A company release published by the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce on 20 August 2020, marking the firm’s anniversary, says the business started as an engineering challenge for Westye F. Bakke, who was trying to find a way to store his son’s insulin at a consistent temperature. In 1943, the release says, Bakke built a freestanding freezer prototype out of salvaged scrap metal in his basement, bending the coils by hand and improvising materials because supplies were scarce during the Second World War. English Wikipedia gives the same origin, citing the release and an archived company history.

The company was formally established as the Sub-Zero Freezer Company on 20 August 1945 in Madison, Wisconsin, according to both the release and English Wikipedia. The release ties the name to standards for freezing food safely below zero. It also says Bakke spent several years helping the architect Frank Lloyd Wright adapt refrigerators to fit Wright’s designs.

The release tells the rest of the early history as a family succession. In 1972, it says, Westye Bakke handed the company to his son Bud Bakke, who led the creation of a lightweight, all-aluminium upright freezer with separate inside doors in place of a top-opening chest, and the development of a built-in refrigerator designed to fit within the surrounding counters and cabinets. Bud’s son, Jim Bakke, was named chief executive in 1992, and the 2020 release says he was still leading the company from its Madison headquarters and describes the business as a third-generation, family-owned company.

Two refrigerators’ worth of systems, then cooking and cleaning.

The company’s own timeline in the release dates its use of dual refrigeration, with separate sealed systems for the refrigerator and the freezer, to 1955. In the late 1950s, it says, Sub-Zero introduced a built-in unit that sat flush with the cabinets and changed the design so that fronts could be recessed, which allowed each unit to be finished to match the rest of the kitchen. The release places further integrated designs in the 1990s, and says the company began its Kitchen Design Contest in 1993 to recognise designers working with its appliances; the contest is still listed under the trade section of the company website.

Cooking came through an acquisition. English Wikipedia says that in 2000 the company acquired the domestic appliance line of the Wolf Range Corporation, a California-based maker of professional-style ranges, cooktops and grills for home and commercial use, citing an archived company history. The release describes the purchase as buying the brand rights to the Wolf name, a mainly commercial brand recognised for its red knobs, and says the company then developed a residential cooking line under it. English Wikipedia says Wolf Appliance Inc., the corporate companion to Sub-Zero, now sells ranges, cooktops, wall ovens, warming drawers and ventilation; the Wolf side has its own guide, Wolf Brand Guidelines. The release’s timeline adds the stainless PRO 48 refrigeration unit in 2005 and Wolf’s dual-fuel range, with gas burners above and electric convection ovens below, in 2006, followed in 2013 by a new generation of Sub-Zero and Wolf products.

Dishwashers completed the set. The release’s timeline says Sub-Zero and Wolf launched dishwashers under the name Cove in 2018, while its main text says the Cove line debuted in 2019. English Wikipedia lists the three brands of Sub-Zero Group, Inc. as Sub-Zero for refrigerators and wine preservation, Wolf for cooking and Cove for dishwashers, and describes the company as privately held and based in Madison.

Design and documentation.

The brands in this group all make major appliances for the home: cookers and ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers and laundry machines. European and global appliance brands sit at many different points in the trade, from family companies that still carry a founder’s name to labels that now belong to much larger industrial groups, and a single name can appear on products built in several countries for different markets.

An appliance brand’s identity is usually carried less by one machine than by a badge, a name and the look of a range, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, merged with a rival, been bought by a group abroad or moved its factories over the decades. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its appliances are actually made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its appliances are made and how its marks have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Three specialists

One name per job in the kitchen.

The group’s identity is built on keeping each name to one task. In the 2020 release the company calls Sub-Zero “the preservation specialist” and Cove “the specialist in all things clean”, and English Wikipedia shows a separate logo for each of the three brands. The website follows the same division: its top navigation sorts the range into refrigeration, cooking, dishwashing and outdoor, with Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove as separate entries. Within refrigeration, the site names a Classic Series, a Designer Series and a PRO Series alongside wine storage and undercounter units, and an editorial section called The Living Kitchen carries stories on design, food and places. A trade section aimed at designers and architects offers a product specification library, installation videos and continuing-education courses.

Production is spread across several American states. English Wikipedia lists production facilities in Madison and Fitchburg, Wisconsin; Phoenix and Goodyear, Arizona; and Richmond, Kentucky, and a new facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which it says was scheduled to open in 2025, citing The Gazette of Cedar Rapids. The headquarters remains in Madison, where the business was formed, and the family that founded it still runs it, according to the 2020 release.

For a design guide, Sub-Zero shows how a company can extend from one appliance into a full kitchen without merging its names: refrigeration, cooking and cleaning each keep a separate brand, and the built-in, cabinet-matched refrigerator puts the kitchen’s design ahead of the appliance’s own. Compare it with its cooking stablemate Wolf and with the German refrigerator maker Liebherr. For this guide we use deep freeze, stainless and frost with a clean sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
