Valley of the deer

A family, a glen and a Christmas Day still.

Glenfiddich is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky made in Dufftown, in Moray, in the glen of the River Fiddich. Work on the distillery began in 1886, when William Grant and his six sons started building it, according to The Riverside Dictionary of Biography (2005), and its first spirit ran from the stills on Christmas Day 1887, English Wikipedia says, citing the company and Gavin D. Smith’s book The Secret Still (2002).

The name is the brand’s first piece of design. English Wikipedia, citing the company, says Glenfiddich comes from the Scottish Gaelic Gleann Fhiodhaich, meaning “valley of the deer,” and that this is the source of the brand’s stag emblem.

The distillery belongs to William Grant & Sons, a family-owned company headquartered in Dufftown. The family built a second distillery next door, Balvenie, in 1892, and the English Wikipedia article on the company’s Grant’s blend dates the launch of that blend to 1898. In the 1920s, while Prohibition was in force in the United States, Glenfiddich was one of very few distilleries to increase production, the whisky writer Charles Maclean noted in Eyewitness Companions: Whisky (2008), which left it with aged stock when demand returned after repeal. In the 1950s the family added its own coppersmiths, to maintain the copper stills, and its own cooperage, the company says.

Schleger’s three sides, and a single malt sold abroad.

The best-known piece of Glenfiddich design is its triangular bottle. It was designed by Hans Schleger, the émigré designer who set up his own firm, Hans Schleger & Associates, in 1953 and made identities and posters for Penguin, the John Lewis Partnership, Shell-Mex & BP and the Edinburgh Festival; English Wikipedia credits him with the triangular bottle for both Glenfiddich and Grant’s. The English Wikipedia article on Glenfiddich dates the bottle’s launch to 1956.

The brand’s other turning point was commercial. In 1963 the company began selling Glenfiddich as a single malt in the United States and other export markets; The Wall Street Journal (2021) and The Hindu both credit it with helping to create the modern single malt category. English Wikipedia, citing the Journal, adds that the company was among the first to pack its bottles in tubes and gift tins and to see the importance of airport duty-free shops.

The bottle was redrawn in 2019. From 18 June that year the 12- and 15-year-old whiskies appeared in new bottles, renamed “Our Original Twelve” and “Our Solera Fifteen,” with the 18-year-old to follow in 2020, Forbes reported. The London agency Here Design engraved a “V” into the glass as a nod to the Speyside valley, put the family’s signature on the cap and set the stag in gold; Claudia Falcone, then global brand director, told the magazine the aim was to draw on “the special place where our liquid is produced.” Forbes called changing such a familiar bottle “a very risky move.”

Advertising has leaned on art and technology. In 2015 the agency Gravity Thinking made a film for the relaunched 21-year-old in which a single drop of whisky is held in mid-air by sound waves, Campaign reported in 2015. Since 2002 the distillery has run an Artists in Residence programme, bringing artists from around the world to work in Dufftown each year, the Northern Scot reported in 2021. A separate MGD guide looks at the lettering Glenfiddich uses.

The seven brands in this group are all whisky names from Ireland and Scotland: Bushmills, Tullamore D.E.W., Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, The Macallan, Chivas Regal and The Famous Grouse. Irish and Scotch whisky brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from names that still carry a founder’s or a place’s name to names that now belong to much larger drinks groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a local bar to an airport shop.

A whisky brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single bottle than by a label, a name and the place it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its whisky is actually made and bottled.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its whisky is made and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Glenfiddich

Still made in Dufftown, still family-owned.

Glenfiddich is still distilled at the Dufftown site where it began. English Wikipedia says the distillery draws its water from the nearby Robbie Dhu springs, matures its spirit in casks including American bourbon barrels and Spanish sherry butts, and has a bottling hall on site as well as a large bottling plant at Bellshill. Its small “swan neck” copper pot stills are maintained by the company’s own coppersmiths, the company says. The distillery is one of the stops on Scotland’s Malt Whisky Trail, the BBC noted in 2012.

The owner has stayed in the family. William Grant & Sons is a family-owned company, and English Wikipedia says Glenfiddich is managed by the fifth generation of William Grant’s descendants. Around it the group has grown: the Girvan grain distillery in Ayrshire was built in 1963, Kininvie was founded in 1990, Hendrick’s Gin was launched in 1999 and the Ailsa Bay distillery was built in 2009, English Wikipedia says, and in September 2014 the company bought Drambuie, BBC News reported. Glenfiddich was the world’s best-selling single malt Scotch as of 2016, Forbes wrote in 2019.

The brand has also put its name to culture beyond the bottle. From 1970 it sponsored the Glenfiddich Food and Drink Awards for writing and broadcasting about food in Britain, discontinued in 2008, and from 1998 the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards, run with The Scotsman. In 2021 the distillery began converting its lorries to run on biogas made from its own distilling waste, Reuters reported.

For a design guide, Glenfiddich shows how a place name, an animal and an unusual bottle shape can carry a family single malt from a Victorian glen to the export shelves of today. Compare The Glenlivet, its Speyside rival, and The Macallan, another Speyside single malt. For this guide we use pine green, stag gold and valley cream with a classical serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
