Four Wildstorm colleagues above a record shop

Idea and Design Works, Pacific Beach and a creative services start, 1999.

IDW started as a design studio whose name is spelled out in its initials: Idea and Design Works. Wikipedia says the company was formed in 1999 by Ted Adams, Alex Garner, Kris Oprisko and Robbie Robbins, who had met while working at Wildstorm Productions, and that IDW Publishing began as the publishing division of Idea and Design Works, LLC. The Beat gave the same four founders and the same year in a report published on 27 April 2023.

The first office was modest. A news story from the San Diego State University library, published on 27 July 2023, said IDW began with four people in a windowless office above a Tower Records store in Pacific Beach, a neighbourhood of San Diego, the city where the company is still based. The same story described Adams and Robbins as the founders who kept a copy of everything the company published.

The studio side of the name came first. Wikipedia, citing Comic Book Resources, says that when Jim Lee sold Wildstorm to DC Comics in 1999, he handed the new company the creative services work that Adams had previously run at Wildstorm, and that this helped IDW turn a profit in its first year.

When the holding company took the IDW name in 2015, its chairman Howard Jonas described IDW, in remarks reported by The Beat, as about fifteen years old, which matches the 1999 start.

An outside investor, a holding company and a leadership turnover, 2007–2022.

IDW took on outside capital in its first decade. Wikipedia says IDT Corporation, the telecoms company chaired by Howard Jonas, bought a majority interest from the founders in 2007 and increased it in 2009, and that IDT then spun off CTM Media Holdings, which held that majority interest together with the CTM Media Group business. The Beat, reporting on 3 April 2015, said CTM Media Holdings would from then on operate as IDW Media Holdings to reflect IDW’s place as its main business, with Adams, then chief executive and publisher of IDW, becoming chief executive of the renamed holding company.

The same report listed the units then gathered under the IDW name, including IDW Publishing, IDW Entertainment, IDW Games and Top Shelf Productions; Wikipedia, citing Comic Book Resources, dates the Top Shelf acquisition to 6 January 2015.

The founders’ era ended over 2017 and 2018. ICv2 and Publishers Weekly reported that Greg Goldstein became publisher of IDW Publishing in November 2017 while Adams stayed chief executive, and that Kerry McCluggage, a former television executive and board member, succeeded Adams as chief executive of IDW Media Holdings in July 2018. The San Diego State library story says Adams and Robbins left IDW in 2018, after almost 20 years, and founded Clover Press in 2019; in 2022 they donated their archive, more than 20,000 titles, to the university library as the IDW Founders Collection.

Distribution changed too. Wikipedia says IDW announced in September 2021 that it would move its comic-shop distribution to Penguin Random House, with that arrangement starting in June 2022.

Typography

From a lightbulb to three angled initials.

A comics or manga publisher’s identity usually reaches readers in small places. The company mark sits in a corner of the cover, at the foot of the spine or on the copyright page, often at a size of a few millimetres, while the title logo and the artwork take the rest of the space. Many publishers also run several imprints, each with its own name and symbol, so that a reader can tell a children’s line from an adult one, or a reprint series from new work, at a glance on the shelf. Where stories are serialised in anthology magazines, the magazine masthead becomes a brand of its own, redrawn from time to time and repeated on every collected volume that comes out of it.

Recognition, though, mostly attaches to the stories and characters rather than to the company. Readers tend to remember a series, its lettering and its cover style long before they notice who published it, and adaptations for screen or merchandise carry the title’s look further than the publisher’s name. That leaves the company mark with a quieter job: a consistent signature that links many different titles, appears on contracts, trade-fair stands, websites and licensing material, and has to work in one colour beside artwork that changes with every book. When a publisher sells its work in other countries, the same mark also helps foreign readers connect translated editions back to one source. For designers, the practical point is to plan the mark as a set of small, repeatable placements rather than as a single large logo.

IDW Publishing

Off the exchange, a new chief executive and a new mark.

The company changed its corporate footing in 2023. The Beat reported on 27 April 2023 that IDW would leave the NYSE American and stop its SEC reporting, a step the board described as going dark, and that Davidi Jonas would replace Allan Grafman as chief executive. The report described Howard Jonas as IDW’s chairman and principal owner and Davidi Jonas as his son. ICv2, in an interview column published on 11 May 2023, said Davidi Jonas had first met Adams around 2013, had later advised the company and had returned to an active role in March 2023. IDW Media Holdings has owned IDW Publishing since its 2015 renaming, with the Jonas family as its principal owners.

The visual identity followed a year later. The Beat reported on 17 October 2024, during New York Comic Con, that IDW had unveiled a new logo designed by its director of design, Nathan Widick, which combines the company’s initials into a single symbol, with the W forming the lower half. The report said the team had worked through hundreds of concepts, including a serious attempt to rework the company’s classic lightbulb logo, before choosing to look forward, and that the new mark would appear on all IDW books from 2025. It also noted that 2024 was the company’s 25th anniversary year. Wikipedia dates the earlier marks to 1999–2015 and 2015–2025.

The list has kept adding imprints under the new mark: Wikipedia says IDW Dark was announced in October 2024 and IDW Crime, for crime fiction, in February 2026.

For a design guide, IDW Publishing shows how a company named for idea and design work can trade a literal symbol, the lightbulb, for its own initials once the initials are the better-known name. Compare Dark Horse Comics, another comics publisher based on the West Coast, and Image Comics, the company Jim Lee’s Wildstorm studio belonged to in the 1990s. For this guide we use sigil blue, lightbulb amber and Pacific sand with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
