From the stage to the sausage plant

A television star goes back to the family trade of his Texas hometown.

Jimmy Dean is an American brand of breakfast sausage and breakfast foods, owned today by Tyson Foods. It is named after its founder, the country singer and actor Jimmy Dean, and English Wikipedia dates the brand’s founding to 1969.

Before he sold sausage, Dean was an entertainer. The Associated Press, in a report published on 13 June 2010, said he was raised in Plainview, Texas, and had a successful entertainment career in the 1950s and 1960s that included the nationally televised “The Jimmy Dean Show.” The AP said his song “Big Bad John,” about a coal miner who saves his fellow workers, became a hit in 1961, and that he later took acting roles, including the part of Willard Whyte in the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever.

The sausage business drew on a family trade. The AP report said that in 1969 Dean went into the sausage business, starting the Jimmy Dean Meat Co. in his hometown, and that the company opened with a plant in Plainview. The same report said Dean’s family had butchered hogs when he was young, and that in the new business the Dean brothers, Jimmy and Don, ground the meat while their mother seasoned it.

The original product had a plain name. Wikipedia says the breakfast sausage that Dean founded was originally called “Pure Pork Sausage,” citing a Texas Monthly feature from August 1983. Wikipedia also says the company did well partly because of Dean’s own extemporised, good-humoured commercials.

Sara Lee, a split, Hillshire Brands and Tyson Foods.

Dean did not keep the company for long. The AP reported in 2010 that he sold it to the Sara Lee Corp. in 1984, and Wikipedia gives the same year. Wikipedia says Dean remained involved as the company’s spokesman after the sale, although Sara Lee soon began phasing him out of management duties.

The spokesman role ended in a public dispute. The AP said in its 2010 report that Sara Lee, then based in Chicago, let Dean go as spokesman in 2003, and that Dean responded with a statement titled “Somebody doesn’t like Sara Lee.” According to the AP, Dean told the agency in January 2004 that he believed the company wanted to attract younger shoppers, while Sara Lee said it had not renewed his contract because the brand was going in a new direction that required a change in marketing.

The founder died in 2010. The AP reported that Jimmy Dean died on 13 June 2010 at his home in Henrico County, Virginia. The brand’s own website also gives 13 June 2010 as the date of his death.

The brand then moved through a corporate split. An AP report carried by USA Today on 6 June 2012 said Sara Lee was dividing into two companies and would name its North American business Hillshire Brands, a business that would include the Hillshire Farm, Jimmy Dean and Ball Park brands. The AP said the two companies would separate on 28 June 2012, and Wikipedia says Hillshire Brands began trading on 29 June 2012.

Two years later Hillshire itself was sold. A Reuters report published by CNBC on 9 June 2014 said Tyson Foods had won a bidding contest for Hillshire Brands, which the report described as the maker of Jimmy Dean sausages, and that Tyson had announced an agreement to buy it that day. Wikipedia says Hillshire Brands was acquired by Tyson Foods in 2014. Tyson Foods has owned Jimmy Dean since 2014, and the brand’s website carries a Tyson Foods copyright line. Wikipedia records a December 2018 recall of some Jimmy Dean sausage links over possible metal contamination.

Design and documentation.

The brands in this group sell hot dogs, sausages, sliced deli meats and breakfast meats, foods that are bought chilled or frozen and are often chosen quickly from a long refrigerated case. Packaging in this category has to work at a glance: a name, a colour and a picture of the food have to be legible through clear film or on a small carton, under bright supermarket lighting, next to many similar packs.

That is why identity in this part of the grocery trade tends to rest on a few repeated signals rather than on a single container. A wordmark, a founder’s name, a slogan, a mascot or a jingle can travel across packs, advertising and sponsorships, while the pack itself changes size and format many times over the decades.

The companies behind these names have often changed hands, merged their factories or moved production, so each guide asks plain questions: who started the brand, who owns it now, where its meat is processed and how its look has been presented. Each separates what independent sources record from what a company says about itself.

The founder as the face

Plainspoken lines about mornings, spoken by the man on the pack.

Jimmy Dean’s identity was built around a person. Wikipedia says the brand’s early success owed something to Dean’s own commercials, and the company’s website today describes him as the plainspoken sausage spokesman who appeared in his own advertising, talking in what it calls a charming Southern way about sausage, life and mornings.

The company still quotes him. On its “Our Story” page, the brand repeats lines it attributes to Dean, including “Wake up like a tight pair of pants, ready to rip” and “Get yourself a large chunk of that good morning feeling,” and says that kind of wisdom continues to inspire the company. The same page recalls his music and television career, including “Big Bad John” and “The Jimmy Dean Show.” These are the company’s own words about its founder.

The founder returned to the advertising after his death. Wikipedia says that in 2018 the company resumed an advertising campaign featuring Dean, citing a television spot catalogued by iSpot.tv under the title “Good Morning Feeling,” the phrase the company still uses on its website.

The products have grown from a single sausage into a breakfast range. Wikipedia says the brand’s main products are chicken and pork sausage-based breakfast items, sold raw, frozen, precooked or assembled. The Reuters report of 2014 mentioned Jimmy Dean frozen breakfast sandwiches alongside the sausage, and the brand’s website today groups its range under headings including premium bacon, fresh sausage and breakfast bowls. Wikipedia says the brand added a plant-based patty to a breakfast sandwich in January 2021, and a second plant-based sandwich later that year.

For a design guide, Jimmy Dean shows how a founder’s name, face and speaking voice can become the brand itself, and how that voice can be kept in use by later owners long after the founder has left the business. Compare it with Hillshire Farm and Ball Park, which shared the Hillshire Brands portfolio with it in 2012. For this guide we use sausage red, sunrise orange, biscuit cream and cast iron with a slab serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
