Houston Texans Brand Guidelines
A demonym for a name, a bull drawn like a map of the state, and a fourth colour added in 2024.

Two constants: a deep steel blue, battle red and liberty white palette and a tall squared sans register. Abstract homage — not a Houston Texans product or mark; no helmet, uniform or logo is reproduced.
A new club for an old football city
The Oilers left, a businessman stepped in, and focus groups narrowed a list of five names.
The Houston Texans exist because Houston lost its first NFL club. English Wikipedia says the Houston Oilers, who had played in the city from 1960, moved to Nashville after the 1996 season and were later renamed the Tennessee Titans. Around the same time, Wikipedia says, the Houston businessman Bob McNair had failed in a bid to bring a National Hockey League team to the city, and turned instead to football, founding Houston NFL Holdings with his partner Steve Patterson. Working with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, they pushed for a new domed stadium as part of the bid, and on 6 October 1999, Wikipedia says, the league awarded the new franchise to Houston.
The name came out of a deliberate process. Writing in ESPN’s NFL Nation guide to the origins of every league team name, published on 2 February 2022, the Texans reporter Sarah Barshop said that after the franchise was awarded, the organisation used focus-group committees to gather ideas and got down to five options: Bobcats, Stallions, Wildcatters, Apollos and Texans. McNair made the final choice, she wrote, and said: “I’m proud to be a Houstonian, and I’m proud to be a Texan.”
The choice was made public with some ceremony. Wikipedia says the club was officially christened the Houston Texans on 6 September 2000 before thousands at a rally in downtown Houston, where McNair said the name and logo had been chosen to “embody the pride, strength, independence and achievement that make the people of Houston and our area special.” The name had a long history in football. Wikipedia lists several earlier clubs called Texans, among them a Canadian Football League team in San Antonio, a World Football League team in Houston, the Dallas Texans who played a single NFL season in 1952, and the AFL’s Dallas Texans, the club that became the Kansas City Chiefs. Wikipedia says McNair received permission from the Chiefs’ owner, Lamar Hunt, to use the name, and compares it to the way the Montreal Canadiens took their name from a demonym.
The team began play in 2002, Wikipedia says, in the newly opened Reliant Stadium, the building now known as NRG Stadium, with Dom Capers as head coach.

From founder to wife to son: three McNairs in charge.
The Texans have stayed with the family that founded them. Wikipedia says that on 26 November 2018 Janice McNair, Bob McNair’s wife, became principal owner and senior chair of the club, while their son, D. Cal McNair, became chairman and chief operating officer. Wikipedia says Cal McNair became principal owner in 2024, when his mother transferred ownership to him. A KLTV report of 23 April 2024 identified him as the club’s chair and CEO when he presented the new uniforms that spring. The family has its own place in the club’s presentation: Wikipedia says Bob McNair was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor on 6 October 2019, and Janice McNair on 2 November 2025.
Much of the club’s language comes from its emblem. Wikipedia says the official mascot is Toro, an anthropomorphic blue bull, and that the seats behind the north end zone are called the Bull Pen, home to fan traditions, a pep band and a pre-game toast. Before each home kickoff, Wikipedia says, the stadium screens show a clip of a raging bull thrashing that week’s opponent, set to AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck”, and during the 2010s the team adopted the moniker “Bulls on Parade”, after the Rage Against the Machine song used in its introductions.
The colours have their own days on the calendar. Wikipedia describes Battle Red Day, when the team wears its red alternate jerseys, and since 2007 red trousers, and fans are encouraged to wear red, and a Liberty White-Out, when players wear all white and fans are asked to match. The other side of the Oilers story still runs through the brand. Wikipedia says that the Adams family, owners of the Titans, retain the rights to the Oilers name and colours, that the Titans brought out Oilers throwback uniforms in 2023, and that for the 2026 season the Titans moved their own uniforms and logo to the Oilers colours, which drew complaints from Texans supporters.
Typography
Design and documentation.
Professional football franchises are portable in a way that consumer brands usually are not. A team can keep its name, its colours and its helmet mark while changing cities, and the visual identity then has to work in a new market that did not grow up with it. Designers handling a relocation usually decide what to keep and what to localise: the nickname and the core mark often travel, while the city name, the stadium and the advertising change around them.
Colour is the other long-running thread. A shade retired in one decade can come back as an alternate uniform and then return as the primary look, and that kind of return is usually framed around heritage rather than novelty. The helmet is a compressed version of the brand, because a single mark on each side has to read clearly at distance and on screens of every size.
Stadiums add a further layer. Venue names, signage and wayfinding sit beside the team’s own mark, and when a team shares or moves venues, its identity has to hold its own against everything else on the building.

A bull drawn like a flag
Three named colours in 2000, a fourth in 2024, and an H on the back of the helmet.
The logo was unveiled with the name. Wikipedia describes it as an abstract bull’s head, split so that it resembles both the flag of Texas and the outline of the state, with a lone star for the eye whose five points, it says, stand for pride, courage, strength, tradition and independence. The bull, Wikipedia says, points to the cattle ranching that helped settle the state in the nineteenth century. McNair gave the colours names rather than numbers: Deep Steel Blue, Battle Red and Liberty White.
The uniforms followed a year later, at another downtown rally, according to Wikipedia. The helmet shown when the name was unveiled was white, but the team settled on a dark blue helmet carrying the bull, with red trim on blue or white jerseys. Wikipedia says the club has usually paired blue jerseys with white trousers and white jerseys with blue trousers; it added a red alternate jersey with blue trim in 2003, red trousers for an all-red look in 2007, and brought that look back in 2023 after setting it aside in 2010. A patch marked the inaugural season in 2002 and another the tenth anniversary in 2012.
A full redesign came in 2024. KLTV reported on 23 April 2024 that the Texans had released four designs, home, away, alternate and Color Rush, under the hashtag #HTownMade. It described the home helmet as steel blue with blue metallic flake paint, the bull on its sides and a new “H” logo on the back; a white road uniform with black numbers outlined in red; a red alternate; and a Color Rush set that introduced a new “H-Town blue”, with blue outlines around red numbers on a dark base and a blue H outlined in red on the helmet. The team, KLTV said, presents the H as a secondary logo to the bull. Wikipedia adds that the home jerseys gained the team crest on the sleeve and new collar stripes, and that the road and red sets carry blue and red horn stripes on the sleeves. In August 2026, Wikipedia says, a rivalries uniform in all white put the H on the helmet, with chrome details drawn from Houston’s custom car scene, a graffiti-style number font taken from the “Be Someone” bridge and an H-Town Blue street-tile pattern in the stripes.
For a design guide, the Houston Texans show how a young club can build an emblem out of local symbols, a bull, a flag and a star, and how a city nickname can become a colour and a letter on the helmet. Compare it with Houston Astros and Houston Rockets, the city’s baseball and basketball clubs. For this guide we use deep steel blue, battle red and liberty white with a squared sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
