Venice Beach

A bodybuilder’s gym in a Los Angeles beach town.

Gold’s Gym began with one gym in Venice Beach, California, opened by the bodybuilder Joe Gold in 1965, as the BBC reported in May 2020 and the Dallas Business Journal in June 2004. English Wikipedia dates the opening to August 1965 and says Gold converted a building he owned on Pacific Avenue; Club Industry reported in August 2020 that 25 August 2020 was the company’s 55th anniversary.

The gym changed hands early. English Wikipedia says Gold, a merchant-marine veteran, sold the business in 1970 to Dave Saxe and Bud Danits, and that a member, Ken Sprague, bought it in late 1971 and promoted it with bodybuilding contests and shows. It says Sprague sold it in 1979 to Ed Connors, Pete Grymkowski and Tim Kimber, who moved it to a larger building and began franchising the name in 1980, along with licences for products such as clothing.

What turned the name into a brand was a film. The 1977 documentary Pumping Iron, which featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, made the gym famous, the BBC reported in 2020; the Dallas Business Journal wrote in 2004 that the film “made Gold’s a household name” and noted that it also featured Lou Ferrigno, who went on to play the Incredible Hulk on television. English Wikipedia says filming began at the gym in 1975, after Sprague gave the director George Butler unrestricted access and painted over windows and hung lighting to turn the gym into a set.

Colour

Black, gold and a name on a T-shirt.

The Gold’s Gym name has travelled far beyond the original building on Pacific Avenue. English Wikipedia says the owners who bought the gym in 1979 sold licences for products such as fitness equipment and clothing as well as franchises, and that the brand expanded abroad from the mid-1980s, beginning with Canada in 1985.

The original gym itself was plain. A Reuters report published by NBC News on 12 July 2004 described it as an “unassuming storefront in a low-rent district” that drew an international following, and said Gold had hand-welded and designed much of its equipment, including cable-based machines. Michael Uretz, Gold’s later business partner, told Reuters that Gold had set the tone of a tough-minded place where “the only music was sweating and grunting.” Gold sold his namesake gym in the 1970s, the report said, and went on to found World Gym in Marina del Rey, California. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a statement quoted by Reuters that Gold’s Gym was where he first went to work out when he came to America in 1968.

The company’s own website ties the brand to its founding year in Venice, 1965.

Its owner says much the same. RSG Group’s website introduces the brand under the German heading “Von Venice Beach zum Global Player,” retells Joe Gold’s opening of his gym in Los Angeles in 1965 and names Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno among the gym’s early regulars. RSG Group also says that it opened a Gold’s Gym flagship in Berlin in 2021.

The Dallas Business Journal reported in 2004 that the company was still based in Venice; by 2020 Club Industry described Gold’s Gym International as based in Dallas, the home city of its previous owner, TRT Holdings.

Typography

Design and documentation.

A gym or fitness-studio brand reaches people through spaces as much as through screens, so its identity has to work on a wide range of surfaces. Exterior signage is often the first contact: a fascia or illuminated sign has to read from across a car park or a busy street, which tends to favour a short wordmark, a simple symbol and a colour that holds up at night. Inside, the brand moves onto walls, floor graphics, wayfinding, locker areas and reception desks, where tone of voice and typography carry as much weight as the logo itself.

Lighting is a design tool in this category. Some studios use coloured light to set a mood for a class, while others favour bright, even light and pale finishes; either way, the chosen light changes how the brand colour looks in person. Apparel and merchandise extend the identity onto staff uniforms, towels, bottles and bags, so marks need to survive embroidery, single-colour print and small sizes. Apps and booking tools add another layer, translating the palette and type into icons, buttons and class schedules on a phone. A consistent system ties these touchpoints together without forcing every location to look identical.

Gold’s Gym

Private equity, a hotel group and a German gym company.

The franchise passed through a series of owners. English Wikipedia says the company was sold in 1999 to the private-equity firm Brockway Moran & Partners. In June 2004 the Dallas Business Journal reported that TRT Holdings of Irving, Texas, the owner of Omni Hotels, was buying Gold’s Gym International from Brockway Moran, with the sale expected to close in late July and senior management, led by the chief executive Gene LaMott, staying in place. The paper said the terms were not disclosed and that both companies were privately held.

In May 2020 Gold’s Gym filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection during coronavirus closures, the BBC and Business Insider reported, with its chief executive Adam Zeitsiff saying the brand was not going out of business.

RSG Group of Berlin, the owner of the McFIT and John Reed gym brands, has owned Gold’s Gym since 2020. Club Industry reported that RSG Group GmbH finalised its purchase of Gold’s Gym International, of Dallas, on 24 August 2020, and that Zeitsiff and other executives left the company the next day, with Sebastian Schoepe, president of RSG Group North America, named as the new chief executive, according to a Gold’s Gym spokesperson. Club Industry said RSG had won the bidding after TRT Holdings put Gold’s Gym International into Chapter 11 in May, and described RSG’s McFIT brand by its slogan, “the fitness studio for everyone.” The magazine also quoted RSG’s founder and chief executive, Rainer Schaller, saying the group would “breathe new life” into the brand. RSG Group says it acquired Gold’s Gym through a bidding process and integrated the brand into its group, where its website lists it among the group’s brands alongside McFIT, John Reed and Heimat, and that franchisees run their Gold’s Gyms independently while drawing on the group’s marketing support.

Some national rights sit with master franchisees. In February 2022 Business Today reported that the Indian fitness platform Cult.fit had taken a majority stake in F2 Fun & Fitness India, becoming the master franchise partner for Gold’s Gym in India.

For a design guide, Gold’s Gym shows how a brand can be anchored to one place and one year — a Venice Beach gym of 1965 — while its name and colours move between owners and countries. Compare Crunch Fitness and Equinox, two other gym brands built around their clubs, and Peloton. For this guide we use black, a gold-yellow and bronze with a condensed sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
