The botanical drink from a neuroscientist’s lab

Sentia is the UK botanical drink from GABA Labs — co-founded by the neuroscientist David Nutt.

Sentia brings the round its science story — the UK non-alcoholic botanical drink from GABA Labs, the company co-founded by the neuropsychopharmacologist David Nutt, marketed around the science of the brain’s GABA system. Sentia makes a functional botanical drink, and its answer to a round about the functional pour is a research pedigree: a botanical spirit built by a lab, to be sipped like a spirit. A brand, from a lab.

Its identity is the botanical drink from a neuroscientist’s lab. Sentia’s botanical blend, its GABA Labs parentage and its science pedigree are the story here. A brand, scientific. The botanical drink from a neuroscientist’s lab.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise, and functional claims are the brand’s own. Sentia, at sentiaspirits.com, makes non-alcoholic botanical drinks, a Red, a Black and a Gold, which the site now also styles under a GABA name, so we describe them as Sentia’s Red, Black and Gold botanical spirits. It was created by GABA Labs, established in 2019 in the UK, and co-founded by Professor David Nutt as chief scientific officer and David Orren as managing director, and the Sentia drink launched in 2021, so we name both founders. On where it is made, a theme of this round, no production location is documented, and the company is based in Hemel Hempstead, so we say the company is UK-based and does not publish where the drinks are produced. On its science, which we frame carefully: the brand markets the drinks around the GABA system, and says they contain botanical GABA enhancers rather than GABA itself, and we report all relaxation and mood language as the brand’s own marketing, not as fact. On a key distinction, Sentia is the botanical drink, and Alcarelle is a separate molecule venture under the same lab, so we do not conflate them or call Sentia synthetic alcohol. Its name and bottle are IP we describe but do not reproduce; there is no official brand hex; these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

Sentia lives in a botanical red. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Sentia’s identity is scientific, botanical and considered — a botanical red, an ink, a rose, a deep red, and a paper. The palette leans botanical red and rose: a deep, considered register that nods to a botanical spirit and a laboratory seriousness rather than a loud palette. It signals a science-led botanical drink. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a botanical red signals a scientific, considered identity. Sentia’s world is a considered, made object. For designers, it is a reminder that a botanical red and a soft rose can carry a drink brand — the tone of a science-led spirit. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: found on a science; report the claims honestly; separate the ventures; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a botanical serif — scientific, considered, refined.

Sentia’s identity carries a scientific, considered, refined spirit — a science-led botanical drink, not a fashion. A botanical serif captures the mood: refined, serious and confident, the register of a lab-born spirit. Set in a botanical-red palette, the botanical serif feels scientific and considered — exactly the personality Sentia carries. It is a research story rather than a logo, mirroring a botanical and a glass. (Sentia’s real bottle is a thing we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a botanical-serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: scientific, considered and refined.

The functional pour

Sentia stands for the botanical drink from a neuroscientist’s lab.

Sentia brings the round its science story. A botanical-red palette, a botanical serif and a research pedigree make one thing — the botanical drink from a neuroscientist’s lab — the whole identity: scientific, botanical and considered. The GABA Labs parentage is the pedigree, and David Nutt is the name. The point is a botanical drink built by a lab, marketed around the science of calm.

Put to work, the identity is a science story told straight, as design. A maker in this spirit would found on a science, report the claims honestly, and separate the ventures. A reader in this spirit would keep the facts right: Sentia is made by GABA Labs, established in 2019 in the UK, co-founded by Professor David Nutt and David Orren, with the Sentia drink launched in 2021; it makes a Red, a Black and a Gold botanical spirit, marketed around the GABA system with botanical GABA enhancers; its production location is undocumented, with the company based in Hemel Hempstead; and Sentia the drink is separate from Alcarelle the molecule venture. Sentia leads the round’s science-story thread with Impossibrew, against the ritual-led brands. The honest editorial moves are to name both founders, to say UK-based not where-made, to report the GABA claims as marketing, and to keep Sentia and Alcarelle separate. The lesson Sentia teaches is that a science can be a whole identity, and reporting its claims honestly keeps it credible.

For designers and brand-builders, Sentia continues the functional pour: found on a science — and report the claims honestly. The lessons: build on genuine research and name it; report functional claims as marketing, in a regulated space, never as fact; keep two ventures distinct; say UK-based when production is undisclosed; and never reproduce a bottle or a molecule diagram. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Sentia is the UK botanical drink from GABA Labs, co-founded by the neuroscientist David Nutt — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Read that way, Sentia is less a bottle than a hypothesis: a botanical drink from a lab. The lesson for a brand is that a science and honest claims reinforce each other, and separating Sentia from Alcarelle keeps the story earned. Sentia made the-botanical-drink-from-a-neuroscientist’s-lab the identity — proof that a science can define a brand.

Source & notes

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Sentia’s visual identity as design commentary, not promotion (Sentia is a non-alcoholic drink); it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Sentia, GABA Labs or David Nutt. The Sentia name and bottle design are IP of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and botanical/glass texture swatches); no bottle, logo or molecule diagram is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from the maker’s sites (sentiaspirits.com, gabalabs.com): Sentia is a non-alcoholic botanical drink (Red, Black, Gold; the site also styles the range under a “GABA” name) marketed around the brain’s GABA system; it is made by GABA Labs (established 2019, UK; registered Hemel Hempstead), co-founded by Professor David Nutt (chief scientific officer; neuropsychopharmacologist and former UK government drugs adviser) and David Orren (managing director); the Sentia drink launched 2021. Honest notes: the production location is not disclosed (the company is UK-based); ⚠ all GABA/relaxation/mood claims are the brand’s own marketing in a regulated space, reported neutrally and NOT as established fact; the brand states the drinks contain botanical “GABA enhancers,” not GABA itself. ⚠ Sentia (the botanical drink) is SEPARATE from Alcarelle (GABA Labs’ distinct synthetic-molecule venture) — the two are not conflated, and Sentia is not “synthetic alcohol.” No official brand hex is used, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
