A brewery in the grounds

A country house, two young brewers and an IPA.

Thornbridge began in the grounds of a country house. Good Beer Hunting reported in October 2020 that Jim Harrison bought the crumbling Thornbridge Hall, in Derbyshire, in 2002, and founded the brewery in one of its outbuildings at the suggestion of David Wickett of Sheffield’s Kelham Island Brewery. Harrison brought in a friend, Simon Webster, who had experience in the food and drink world. The company says the outbuildings were renovated in 2004 to take the brewery, and that in 2005 the two founders recruited two young brewers to work a second-hand 10-barrel kit in the grounds of the hall.

The brewers were Martin Dickie and Stefano Cossi, both fresh from university brewing courses, according to Good Beer Hunting. The company says their first brew was Lord Marples, a 4% bitter that became a core beer. The second became the brewery’s signature. The company dates the first brew of Jaipur to 7 June 2005 and describes it as a 5.9% IPA packed with American hops. Good Beer Hunting recorded that the original was hopped with Cascade, Chinook, Ahtanum and Simcoe, that dry-hopped casks were served at Harrison’s summer garden party that year, and that the beer is named after the Indian city where Harrison was married.

The hall years shaped more than one brewery. Dickie left in 2007 to co-found BrewDog with James Watt, Good Beer Hunting reported, and the company’s own timeline marks his departure in the same year. Thornbridge soon outgrew the hall kit. In 2009 it opened a new brewery at Riverside in Bakewell, which English Wikipedia describes as a 30-barrel plant in a former car showroom; the company says it was formally opened by Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery.

A goddess, a crest and a fireplace scroll.

Thornbridge’s identity has always looked back to the house. The company says the 2009 move to Riverside was followed by a full rebrand that tied the new brewery to Thornbridge Hall through the figure of Flora, the Roman goddess, standing on every label. In 2014, Glass International reported, the glassmaker Beatson Clark began producing a bespoke 500ml amber bottle for the brewery, with the Thornbridge crest around the shoulder and the words “Innovation Passion Knowledge” around the base.

A second redesign followed. The company dates a “refined rebrand” to 2018, saying it brought the Thornbridge Hall fireplace scroll to every label, and its website pictures the decorative fireplace detail at the hall that it says has been used on its can and bottle packaging. The company describes its current logo as a T within a shield, and shows the T in gold on its bottle caps. For the brewery’s 20th anniversary in 2025, the company says, a limited-edition logo appeared on glassware, T-shirts, beer mats and seasonal beers.

Packaging changed as the formats did. The company says a canning line arrived at Riverside in 2019, and its post marking Jaipur’s 18th birthday in June 2023 lists the beer in cask, keg, bottle and can, as well as a bottle-conditioned version. Around Jaipur and Lord Marples the range has grown; the company says Lukas, a 4.2% helles, launched in 2016 and became its house lager, and that Green Mountain, a hazy session IPA, followed in 2018.

The original kit has not gone away. The company says the hall brewhouse has been moved to sit beside its taproom at Riverside, where it is used for experiments, small hall brews and collaborations.

Design and documentation.

The seven brands in this group are all British craft brewers: Camden Town Brewery, Thornbridge, Magic Rock, Siren Craft Brew, Tiny Rebel, Harviestoun and Lost and Grounded. They began as small, founder-run businesses, but they have travelled very different roads since — some remain in their founders’ hands, while others have been sold, licensed or bought back.

Camden Town Brewery was founded in London in 2010 by Jasper Cuppaidge, in railway arches beneath Kentish Town West station, according to English Wikipedia; AB InBev has owned it since 2015, after a sale announced that December. Thornbridge brewed its first beers in 2005 in outbuildings at Thornbridge Hall in Derbyshire and opened a larger brewery in Bakewell in 2009, English Wikipedia says. Harviestoun was started by Ken Brooker in a farm barn near Dollar, in Clackmannanshire — in 1983, English Wikipedia says — and moved to Alva in 2004; Caledonian bought it in 2006, and in April 2008 long-standing shareholders bought it back to keep it independent, The Morning Advertiser reported.

Magic Rock was founded in Huddersfield in 2011 by Richard Burhouse. The Australian brewer Lion took full ownership in 2019, Lion’s UK business passed to Odyssey Inns in 2022, and in January 2025, after administrators were appointed and the Huddersfield brewery closed, Keystone Brewing Group took an exclusive licence to produce the brand, Just Drinks reported. Tiny Rebel was founded in Newport in 2012 by the brothers-in-law Brad Cummings and Gazz Williams and moved its brewing to Rogerstone, in Newport, in 2017. Siren Craft Brew was set up in 2013 by Darron Anley at Finchampstead in Berkshire, and in April 2026 Anley told Beer Today that it was “still independent.” Lost and Grounded was founded in Bristol by Alex Troncoso and Annie Clements and says it was established in 2016.

A brewery’s identity is carried by its pump clips, cans and labels as much as by its beer, and those can outlast changes of owner or even the brewery itself. Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its beer is brewed and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Thornbridge

Pubs, a union set and twenty years of Jaipur.

Thornbridge has also built a pub business. The company says it took on the Highcliffe pub in Sheffield in 2010–11 and reopened it as The Greystones, and that its first Thornbridge & Co venue opened in York in 2018. The Morning Advertiser reported in February 2025 that Thornbridge had joined with Pivovar in 2018 to create city-centre pub sites, and that a flagship London site would lead three openings that year; the company’s timeline for 2026 mentions new venues in London and Sheffield.

The brewery has also taken on a piece of British brewing history. When Carlsberg Marston’s retired the historic Burton union system at Marston’s, Thornbridge acquired a section of the set and installed it at Riverside by May 2024 with help from Garrett Oliver, the company says; English Wikipedia, citing the BBC in May 2024, says the work had Brooklyn Brewery’s support and used equipment donated by Marston’s. The company says the first beer through the union was a version of Jaipur. Collaboration runs through its record: the company says Budweiser Budvar chose Thornbridge in 2023 for Czech Mates, a Czech-style lager it describes as Budvar’s first collaboration brewed outside the Czech Republic.

The founders still lead the business. The Morning Advertiser described Simon Webster in February 2025 as Thornbridge’s chief executive and co-founder, alongside co-founder Jim Harrison, and the company marked its 20th anniversary that year.

For a design guide, Thornbridge shows how a brewery can draw a whole identity from the house where it began — a goddess, a crest and a fireplace scroll. Compare BrewDog, co-founded by Thornbridge’s first brewer Martin Dickie, and Budvar, its partner on Czech Mates. For this guide we use Peak green, fireplace gold and hall stone with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
