Every great day starts the night before

A mattress sold online, compressed into a box.

eve Sleep — the brand writes its name in lower case — is a London mattress brand that went on sale on 14 February 2015, according to the case study entered for the Design Business Association’s Design Effectiveness Awards in November 2018. The same document quotes Kuba Wieczorek as founder and Jas Bagniewski as co-founder, and says the business had just two founders at launch. When the company floated in 2017, the technology news site UKTN described Bagniewski as its founder and chief executive.

The model was the one that became known as “bed in a box.” In May 2017 UKTN described eve as an online-only, direct-to-consumer business selling a single type of foam mattress, compressed and shipped to customers, alongside pillows and bedding. Octopus Ventures, one of its backers, told UKTN that it had first invested in eve in May 2015.

Growth came quickly. eve was admitted to London’s AIM market in May 2017, with trading expected to begin on 18 May, UKTN reported at the time; the awards submission counts 27 months from launch to listing. By 2022, The Retail Bulletin reported, eve described itself as a sleep wellness brand trading in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France, selling through its own website and through a retail partnership with the furniture retailer DFS.

Colour

A yellow surround, a reversed “e” and a box that says good morning.

eve’s identity was designed from the start rather than added later. The agency Studio Minerva created it, according to the Design Business Association, whose awards site lists the project with Studio Minerva as agency and eve Sleep as client. The submission, published by the association, quotes Wieczorek crediting the agency with helping to create the brand, and sets out the thinking. The brief’s line was “Every great day starts the night before,” and the response was to treat a mattress as a morning product rather than a sleepy one: “more morning glass of OJ, less the cosy mug of bedtime cocoa,” in the submission’s words. The name came from the same idea — the eve of a big day.

The identity rested on colour. “It all started with yellow,” the submission says, describing a zesty yellow chosen because no mattress brand owned a colour. The lower-case wordmark sits on a horizon line, meant to suggest the rising and setting sun, and its second “e” is reversed, making the name a palindrome that the agency says was inspired by a couple facing each other on their pillows.

The product carried the colour too. There was one mattress design, made in various sizes, with a bright yellow surround — an idea the submission says was inspired by the red sole of Christian Louboutin’s shoes. The packaging, which the submission calls the brand’s most shared asset, was a white box with the yellow logo wrapping over its corners; inside the lid were the words “wakey, wakey, rise and shine,” a yellow interior printed with quotations, and a sticker shaped like a fried egg giving the mattress size. Limited-edition mattresses featured work by artists including David Shillinglaw and a monogram alphabet by the designer Supermundane.

The same thinking ran through the smaller pieces. The submission describes welcome postcards and posters, memory foam slippers and tote bags printed with the brand’s cheerful lines, and collaborations with design studios including Custhom and MIJO Studio. At launch eve offered a 100-day home trial, which the submission presents as a way of making an unseen purchase feel safe; the website now advertises a 200-night trial.

The work was recognised by the design trade: the Design Business Association gave the eve brand creation project a Silver in its Design Effectiveness Awards in 2019, according to the association’s awards website.

Mattresses and how they are sold.

The seven brands in this group are all mattress names: Silentnight, Relyon, Eve, Layla, Helix, Leesa and Dunlopillo. Mattress brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from long-established factory names sold through bed shops and department stores to younger companies that began by selling online and delivering a mattress rolled up in a box, and a single name can change hands more than once while the product on the shop floor looks much the same.

A mattress brand’s identity is usually carried less by the product itself, which is mostly hidden under a sheet, than by a name, a label stitched to the side, the box it arrives in and the advertising around it. The company behind that name may have been sold, gone through administration, seen its name pass to different owners in different countries or moved its making elsewhere. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its mattresses are actually made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its mattresses are made and how its look has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

eve Sleep

From AIM listing to a Bensons for Beds brand.

The listed company did not survive the downturn of 2022. On 17 October 2022 eve Sleep plc called in administrators, and Bensons for Beds — the British bed retailer backed by the investment firm Alteri Investors — bought the eve brand, website and intellectual property out of administration, Retail Gazette reported that day. The Retail Bulletin named the joint administrators as Matt Ingram and Jimmy Saunders of Kroll, and reported that a sale process begun in June 2022 had been unsuccessful. Eve’s chief executive at the time, Cheryl Calverley, said the business was not big enough to withstand what she called an “economic tsunami.”

Bensons said it would keep eve as a stand-alone brand and relaunch its website, both publications reported, and Alteri’s chief executive, Gavin George, said the brand resonated with “a different demographic of younger consumers.” Bensons for Beds has owned the eve Sleep brand since October 2022. Today the evesleep.co.uk website names the trading company as Bensonsforbedsretail Ltd, trading as Eve Sleep, and sells hybrid and memory foam mattresses — including a flippable hybrid it calls the “wunderflip” — along with beds, bedding and refurbished mattresses.

For a design guide, eve Sleep shows how far a single colour can carry a young brand, from the side of the mattress to the inside of the box. Compare Simba, another British direct-to-consumer mattress brand, and Casper, the American bed-in-a-box name. For this guide we use sunrise yellow, white and charcoal with a rounded sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
